One of my childhood favorites was this game. I remember it very fondly. However when I recently bought this game I had to come to the realization that after playing a LOT of Tomb Raider last year, this just doesn't quite hit the mark. It seems to want to imitate the TR games, which in turn drew inspiration from the Indiana Jones movies. I can't really put my finger on it, but something about this game just doesn't feel as good. The controls aren't tight enought for starters. Indi grabs onto things automatically, which is not a big deal on the surface, but it takes out that engagement with the player. The main problem however is that each chapter is devided into little chunks, and believe me, these chunks are too little. It's seems a bit unfair to say that there's no challenge in it, because I did die a few times, but once you learn from your mistake it's quite easy to finish the level. The real problem that these small levels lead to is that you rarely find yourself facing an engaging mental challenge. Which, to be fair, TR games didn't really have that much either, just a lot of running around, trying to figure out what the heck you are supposed to do. But here you don't have that, you don't go back to the beggining of the level to find that an item you picked up along the way opens up a passage for you, or anything like that. It's much too straightforward. And that's not what one would expect from an Indiana Jones titled game. The combat is simple, but it can be fun. The PC controls are a little jittery though (especially the swimming). It's not unplayable by any means, but it is a minor annoyance. I do want to recommend it though, because it is enjoyable to play as dr. Jones. It's just not very engaging on a mental level in my opinion.
I was reluctand to buy this version, because I heard that earlier gog releases had problems, but I loved the first game, so I gave it a shot. And boy it was a good descision. The game runs flawlessly, even on windows 8 64bits. And how's the game? It's the best rpg for pc. Plain and simple. It has a very interesting, twisted world that you are free to explore. The characters and locations are all very intriguing. I can only recommend it.
This is one of my all time favorites and I've been longing to play it through one more time. When I saw that this was on GOG I almost s*** myself from joy as I've played some other games from gog that had compatibility issues for me. GOG never disappointed me so far and I thought I can't pass on this deal. So I got the game and much to my disappointment GOG dropped the ball on this one. Big time. The main reason why I bought it was because the original version kept crashing on windows 7 (64bit) and it was unplayable. I started playing this one and look here, it crashes right after the FIRST dialogue. So sadly, I can't recommend this to anyone. It's a great game but it doesn't work. I suggest GOG to compensate the buyers or solve the problem or they will loose all credit.
