The Bard's Tale ARPG: Remastered and Resnarkled

Technical problems

I always loved this game when I played it on the C64 in those days in the 80s. So I was looking forward to the PC adaption on GOG. But the game was an absolute disappointment: First, it sticks on a black screen before you can see the menu. If you try to use the task manager to abort and restart it you get the next surprise: you cannot see the task manager because the screen is still black. So you have to remember where there is the button to restart or switch off the computer. If you try to start the game once more afterwards the game starts - sometimes. I did not try the new version of Bard's Tale but started the original version. Of course I knew that it is always a problem to play an old game on a modern system. But here you must be aware of possible sudden crashes when you are out in a dungeon. As you cannot save the game when you are outside the adventurer's guild you lose everything in that case. Seeing this and the really bad control of movements makes me say: I cannot recommend the game although it has been very good in former times. There are many excellent old games on GOG. This one is not.
