In Second Sight, you play as Parapsychology researcher, John Vattic who's lost his memory. John discovers that he's got psychic abilities that he can use to uncover his past and restore his memory. You have a choice of how you want to play the game, either shooting up bad guys in every room or using stealth to get passed them, undetected. There is some puzzle solving, but nothing too difficult. With that said, this game is not perfect. It has a wonky camera and a tedious aiming system. But, the game was released in 2005, so it's forgiveable. And, you get used to these issues and adapt, if you're willing to give the game a chance. It's worth noting that the GOG version of this game has the widescreen fix and appears to have the FPS fix, as well, as it runs very well on Windows 11, even on high resolutions. Native controller support and cloud saves have also been added to the GOG version. I was able to test the Xbox controller with it, and it works well.
A Boy And His Blob is more than just a puzzle platformer... it's a story about friendship. A Blob crash lands on Earth and finds a boy to help him rid his home planet of an evil emperor. You play as the boy, using the Blob as your toolset to help you solve puzzles and get through each stage of the game. The puzzles are straightforward and the levels are pretty linear, but that's not a bad thing. Your goal is to feed the Blob different types of jelly beans which cause it to transform into different tools that you can use to reach different areas of each stage and kill the enemies in your way. Each stage has 3 chests for you to find. The animations in the game are cute, with my favorite one being the hugging of the Blob, which you get an achievement for doing 5 times. This game is perfect if you're just looking for a simple and relaxing puzzle game. My only complaint about the game is that once you have the Blob transform into a tool that you use to reach the next area of the level, he stays transformed until you call him back to you (there's a button for that). I found myself having to spam that button over and over again, until the Blob finally became responsive and came back to me. This does slow down what is otherwise a fluid experience traversing each stage. Other than this, I have no complaints. I highly recommend this game.
Turok is a fast paced FPS with a slew of weapons that all feel satisfying to use. Level design is non-linear, giving the game somewhat of an open world feel. Enemy variety is interesting, as you fight dinosaurs, demons, plants, aliens, and cyborgs, among other things. If you love Doom and Duke Nukem, chances are you'll love Turok.
If it wasn't already a given, Shadow Man is my favorite game of all time. I've owned and played the original on all platforms, including the not so great PlayStation 1 port. It is great to see the game finally remastered in the Kex Engine, giving it smoother controls, updated textures, dynamic lighting and much better physics, among other things. I can tell that Nightdive Studios put a lot of love and care into this game, as they do all of their games. Shadow Man is a beautifully designed open world experience with plenty of immersive story depth, solid voice acting, a great soundtrack, and hours upon hours of gameplay. In the game, you play as Michael LeRoi who becomes endowed with The Masks Of Shadows by a Voodoo priestess called Mama Nettie. This transforms him into Shadow Man, a Voodoo warrior who protects the world of the living (known as Liveside) from threats coming from the hellish world of the dead (known as Deadside). Through a prophetic dream, Mama Nettie reveals to Shadow Man that Legion is ushering in an apocalypse, using Dark Souls (the immortal souls of damned warriors). Legion sends in an army of 5 serial killers to Deadside to construct a cathedral to pain, an asylum that is powered by these Dark Souls, and Shadow Man is tasked with having to stop them. Armed with the power of the Dark Souls and the most powerful Voodoo weapons ever created, Shadow Man must find a way to stop Legion and his army. I've played this game using both an Xbox 360 controller and a keyboard and mouse, and both work great! It's great to see this game being remastered and released for new generations of gamers to experience. I highly recommend this game to anybody that loves the horror genre of video games.
Shadow Man, if you haven't already guesssed, is my favorite game of all time. It has been over 20 years since I first played it, and still haven't found a game that is better. What can I say, Shadow Man has it all, immersive story with plenty of depth, solid voice acting (particulary that of Shadow Man), loveable characters, an eerie atmosphere, creepy sound effects, a great soundtrack, and hours upon hours of addictive gameplay.
