Whilst this is not a complete and utter disaster of a game this really is quite a weak affair. The Spellforce series were quite bold in their implementation of both RPG and RTS style games at the same time, but kind of thinned out the "quality for quantity" by doing so. I have tried some of the others, but this so far is the poorest of the series. - even on "easy" the difficulty is frustratingly high right from the very start - camera angles just don't co-operate with the player making things awkward, your fighting the UI just as much as your enemies! - graphics are ok but could be better - an absolute trademark of "Eurojank" is laughable voice acting, this has that by the shovel full! - the RTS elements are marred by an unforgivable sin, NO ACTIVE PAUSE, combine that with the blatantly cheating AI when it comes to the RTS parts, well....... just not fun at all. Spellforce games have a lot of potential, which they often fall short of realising, but at least they can get past some hurdles without falling, this game does so at the first. Allegedly full of bugs as well, which there is no solution for. I didn't play far enough to really experience that though.

Copy and paste review of my "Gothic 2" and "Gothic 3" review. Well, the same review fits Gothic 3 Forsaken Gods perfectly! Why re-invent the wheel? Again, can't see why it's hated quite so much as all these 1-star reviews show, but I must also agree, it is a poor game overall. The reasons? Well, the same as what I put in my "Gothic 3" review. Unlike "Gothic 3", this one does work straight from install without needing to go download yet more files/patches from other sources. Boy, the in game camera made me want to puke though, spin, spin, spin, wheeeee! :D I again find it very suprising that the bad reviews attract the positive votes for once. Normally on GOG it is the other way around! Well, that in itself is pretty damning evidence of what this game is like. But I'll give it 2-star, again for the "benefit of the doubt" so to speak.

..... already in my review for "Gothic 3". Again, can't see why it's hated quite so much as all these 1-star reviews show, but I must also agree, it is a poor game overall. The reasons? Well, the same as what I put in my "Gothic 3" review. One thing though, this one does work straight from install without needing to go download yet more files/patches from other sources. I also find it very suprising that the bad reviews attract the positive votes for once. Normally on GOG it is the other way around! Well, that in itself is pretty damning evidence of what this game is like. But I'll give it 2-star, the "benefit of the doubt" so to speak.

Seems to be a battle going on between fanbois and hatebois for this game here on these review pages. My opinion is it's not quite as bad as some of the really scathing reviews here would suggest, but it also just isn't that good either. One pet hate of mine is games that are meant to be a "real, open world", yet don't have any female characters in it. Seriously this is a Blazing Saddles, "eeey where de white women at?" job!!!!!! Another pet hate is being forced to be the character the designers say you MUST be. You cannot be you own character, and the one you are forced to be is as dull as swamp water. Combat is pretty shite, not as bad as some reviews say, but it doesn't work well cosmetically, functionally, yeah, does work, just about. Kleptos with love it as you collect tons of stuff! :D Voice acting is just awful! Totally cringe! I also could not for the life of me work out how to buff my chars stats once he'd levelled up. The map was poor as well, it didn't help that your current position was not marked. The game suffers from many poor UI faux-pas that like! You may also need to download a patch that will slightly downgrade the curent version GOG are peddling, that version locks on startup for myself, and many others. It feels "sloppy" in almost every regard, the game should have been so much better. Well, it is a "JoWood" game, kings of "Eurojank". All in all, after 30 minutes of trying, I deemed it not worth my time, nor my money (oops too late - already dished that out for this game), but many others simply worship this game........ so it might just be to your liking. Take the risk buying if you wish, but don't say you were not warned if are disappointed!

..... so what can I add? - I agree with the "dark comic book" style graphics looking rather cool, if a little monochrome, animations are rather comic book too, ie static, not really animated much - sounds / music are basic but do the job - gameplay is simplistic, start off at a base, build a squad, buy equipment, go out an explore nearby ship wrecks for loot, go back to base when "energy" runs low ("energy" just limits your time allowed out on expeditions) and sell loot, heal squal, go back out to do more of said wreck or go to another wreck. Exploration mechanics and the shipwreck map are simply AWFUL, combat mechanics is just basic "card play" and there are not many "cards" to choose from - devs need to do a lot more work filling this one out before it becomes really worth buying So, it's a rather "average" game at the moment, but hopefully could improve later. Yet another good example showing how GOG is infested with hard to believe 5 star hyperbole reviews, that also seem to get dozens of positive votes for some reason. GOG should remove that vote system like they did on the discussion boards, oddly that's not a popular opinion, I recently suggested it and got some of the worst abuse I have ever seen in any forum yet!

Game itself working is 4 or 5 stars, 1 star is for it simply wasting your money as it is right now. I immediately bought this classic when I saw it had arrived on GOG. But I've been left disappointed. Sounds do not work, and the game constantly crashes at any moment at random. GOG have not yet really got this fully ready for sale. Have gone for a refund. ROE 1 did not even work at all. :( It's also an example of how corrupt GOG's review rep system is as well. It's a brand new entry to GOG, so far has one five star review (which looks paid for) an that has 25 pos reps and NO negreps, and one two star review and that suprise suprise has ZERO posreps and 5 neg reps. This will get no posreps either, and probably will have 100 negreps within days. The whole system is just abusively exploited these days and GOG should remove it like they did in the forums. At least give a posrep if you do agree with that statement. Anyway, wait until this "matures" here on GOG before buying, as it's brand new, it's crippled by teething troubles and there is no support / discussion forum going yet. I'm refunding now, and may come back later.

You start weak, and stay weak. Levelling up does very little to strengthen your character and is slow and tedious requiring a lot of XP, yet enemies are very OP and give out little XP. You won't even be equal to even rats until you're at level 5! And some NPCs are just, wow..... they must be level 1000, like the "town guards" for example. You are capped to level 30, and even at that, you are still only an "average strength" character. This was the problem with EB1, and likely is also the problem with EB3. In short, though playable, they are too frustrating and tedious. Go and get the very similar "Geneforge" series instead. They may have primitive graphics, but they are 10x more fun that this. Otherwise the EB series could have been quite good.
