Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus

Unbalanced garbage

It is intended to feast uppon fans of the WH 40K fans. It has super steep curve in the beginning and expect players to find it enjoyable. Nonsense! There is no cover yet player can see it as a wall and hides a troop there expecting to be protected, but no enemy shoots with really high damage for early levels and ignore obstacles. When it is player's turn, troops basically tickle enemies. Not worth the time. It is not the challenge, it is just trash.

Grim Dawn - Forgotten Gods

Love the change and new endgame content

This is visually different than original game and Ashes of Malmouth and it is quite welcoming in my eyes. There is a new questline with unexpected enemy. The only complain I have is that map is not directly connected to the current one but map in map crop connected via teleport. Other than that - spot on. This expansion has a some portal/gate which generates maps for player to play as an end game content. I really love this feature. Of course there is this new clas with it as well.

The Technomancer

Good idea, good story but flawed combat

This is an attempt to make Mass Effect style of a game on a buidget. That is perfectly fine and for the most part they have managed to pull it out. They have created a world with rich story and plot is happening on Mars, but it is set probably few hundreds of years after Mars colonization started by humans from Earth. There are multiple factions and player's choices seem quite obvious if player wants to play as the good guy or as the bad guy. Those are the only choices really... Unfortunatley, weakest link of this game is the combat and there is a lot of combat. Player is technomancer by default but player can choose to ignore Technomancy in favour for other combat styles or make some combination of it. As idea it is great but something is not right in execution. I love the story so during the Chapter 1 I decided to degrade difficulty to Easy and just go with it. Shame but I still I have enjoyed it. Still I do recommend this game. PS: this is actually a sequel to the game "Mars: War Logs"! I found that while playing Chapter 3.

Xenonauts

Starts amazing, but horrible AI cheating

As I stated at first it starts really amazing, everything goes well and difficulty scales niceley. Nostalgia hit is strong in this one. However, after some time, oince you are hitting alien cruisers, 95% hit chance for your troops will feel like 5%, damage that enemy can resist is unbelweavable, yet enemey units will hit increasingly better. Your toops will have frustratingly bad abilities even on lowest diffiulties. As time passes by, your troops, even those with rank of Major, will use granades under their own feet. Unless developer do some balance cvhanges, avoid this title and it's upcoming sequel.

Shadows: Awakening

Flawed but beautiful

This is not a Path of Exile or Diablo clone. This is mostly story driven ARPG where player has differentt kind of customization of their combat skills by selecting "puppets" to carry in the combat. These puppets are fallen heros that your devourer demon... devours. Yet still story, narrative and setting is really what drives this game. And that is something I think is a missed opportunity. Player can have a demon and 3 puppets active at all times but for the story purposes, all puppets are present for banter. In that regard I think they could have done more as there is huge potencial as some puppets have history together or have specific point of view onthe situation. Switching between normal and shadow mode is instant and works great. It is the key mechanic of the game and player should use that and abuse that in the combat. I have played as my main puppet Evia and I must say I really didn't like the way they handled how she died. It is lame but everything else was beautiful. Playing with a different main puppet offers quite different experience and same locations offer different quests thus feeling different. I highly recommend.

Firewatch

Short, effective, good story

This game is for the story. It has a good potential and player needs to take EVERYTHING in consideration. Player plays Henry and his life got turned upside down so he chooses this job and be part of the firewatch. Player has to take in consideration Henry's life before the game and compare that with what he discovers during the gameplay (the very ending). Many on the net were pointing out that D (your ingame supervisor) hides something and try to deepen the mystery. I disagree but it is ultimatley on the each individual player how this story is going to be interpreted. Even though game hints there could be different replays it is not that well made at the end. Game is relativley short but well made. The story before theepilogue is too strong for the actual epilogue that is given. I hope Campo Santo will make better stories in the future even though Firewatch is quite solid.

Aven Colony

Futuristic CityBuilder with a story

I fully recommend this game. In it's essence it is a city building game with a story - on a distant planet, player is assigned to build certain amount of functional settlements and it is accompanied with a story telling from the first to the last mission. Story is not ultra master piece but it is nice. Graphics are really nice and smooth but at the end there is a FMV and animation is really bad (90s level of animation). Still I think this game is worth and I hope Team17 will continue to explore this genre. Technically it is really good - no crashes, no glitches, no hicups.

Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem

Do not buy this game

Developer of this game is not treating GOG players properly. They do not even mention what will happen with the existing GOG customers. They ignore all the posts on their official forums when asked about GOG version of the game. They do not post any official news on GOG. Latest updates are for Steam only. They have overhauled the game few times by now and development is constantly prolongued.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Enhanced Plus Edition

This could have been a gem...

I love a good cRPG but unfortnatley Pathfinder is not good. Everything is good until player becomes a Baron. From that moment onwards there is a management/strategic part with OK-ish features but quests become singificantly unfocused and ill balanced. But the greatest sin of this game is lack of good communication with the player. Those who are more familiar with D&D rules will probably feel comfortable. We who are not and are willing to learn are pushed back by this game and flood of weird and hard to understand rules. There are bugs but combined with what I said it makes encounters frustrating. Once player gets comfortable with the party, game throws difficulty spike without any reason. On one side my people in barony requere my help and I MUST do a particular quest only to discover it is too high encounter and I need to hope for a random encounters on a road to level up. Loading times will be boring time waster unless game is installed on SSD. It is really mind blowing experience when advisor comes back with his mission being succesful yet as a result player receives several negative points (i.e. community, loyalty and military). Why if he was succesful? Why some advisor actions imedietly lock player into waiting this mission to be completed by an advisor and not telling him this will happen? Why locking player in such situation in the first place? When it all comes together it becomes more of a chore for a newcomer into D&D world rather than fun which makes me sad. Just a bit more communication with the player, slightly better pacing and encounter balancing in given quests would improve this game trmendeously. Also some quality of life improvements and bugs fixing should be done.

Frostpunk

Good concept, but crashes often

I was looking forward to this title. Knowing their previous game this was suppose to be no brainer. But technical aspect is bad as player has to suffer many crashes and his patience with ofetn saving and retry lost progress. The end becomes fast paced (click around too much) and I think it is a bad way to do a strategy/management game. As if they haven't had proper solution for the end game. I hope they will address crashing issue ASAP and then maybe improve the end game.
