Atmospheric Platformer

I liked this game and it's a great debut but I was hoping for a little more from it. Perhaps this is because I played Inside first, which was absolutely fantastic, but this game didn't grip me as much as that one and I found the platforming a little more frustrating than interesting. Even so, if you're looking for a pure platformer, this is a pretty good choice! I love the style and setting.

INSIDE

Amazing

This is quite a bleak game but absolutely addictive. I was immediately drawn in and became quite attached to our protagonist despite the lack of dialogue. I was really rooting for him. The art style is great and very effective. Even though you don't see the features of their faces their body language is so descriptive on its own you end up understanding anyway. The puzzles themselves are the perfect level of difficulty. They make you think but they're unlikely to leave you stuck for hours at a time. Getting all the achievements and unlocking the secret ending isn't too terrible a task either. As for the storyline, it's up to interpretation. There's a lot of food for thought here and I know I'll be thinking about it for a while yet. As for whether it's an effective horror game, I would say so. I was definitely in suspense the entire time!

Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned

A Good Game

I have mixed feelings on this game. It's definitely the most ambitious of the series as it tackles a lot of subject matter and has some of the most involved puzzles but I think at times it tried to be too much. It's broken into three days and the first two were of a pretty decent difficulty but I found the third day significantly harder. The amount of research and riddles you have to do almost feel like an actual job. This is both good and bad. I love the material you're looking into but it can be a little intensive. I'm also not sure how I feel about the ending. I think I expected more vampires and less of what I actually got (I won't clarify so there won't be spoilers). It's also a bit of a cliffhanger, so another game would be excellent. Ultimately, if you enjoyed the first two games you'll definitely want to check this one out. It has trouble with Windows 10 but I found dgVoodoo got it to work pretty well. The controls take some getting used to as well but once you do it's pretty smooth.

Great Title

I held off on playing this game for a while and now that I've finished it I have no idea why. This has some solid writing and a good cast of characters. The voice acting is great and the puzzles struck an excellent balance regarding difficulty. There's some heavy subjects in this game but I felt they were dealt with well; there's a bit of a Silent Hill vibe toward the end that I enjoyed. I'd say if you enjoy point-and-click adventures you should definitely give this one a go. I hope it gets a sequel.

An Enjoyable Playthrough

I thought this was a pretty good game, honestly. I'm a little mixed on the ending, it feels like it could have easily taken a different turn and I would have liked to see it expanded on more, but I ultimately I didn't feel as though the ending were a letdown and I could see how one thing led to another for the most part. The writing was great and there were some genuinely eerie moments in the middle section. It also captured that feeling of isolation and loneliness well. The voice acting is superb and navigating the wilderness was satisfying as well. I would definitely recommend this game, particularly when it's on sale, if you like an immersive atmosphere and realistic characters.

Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within

Interesting Sequel

I really liked this game but I would have preferred more overt references to the previous game. As it is, there isn't anything to do with voodoo whatsoever. Having said that, I do like the setting in Germany and this game is as well researched as the last. I particularly liked everything to do with Ludwig II. The setting was fantastic in this regard and I nearly felt as though I'd visited the area myself. There were times where I felt the characters were unlike their portrayal in the first game, though. That's to be expected a little since this game is using FMV but I think a lot of it has to do with the setting change. Gabriel is a fish out of water in Germany and it shows. At times I really missed the New Orleans setting as much as I enjoyed certain aspects as mentioned above. I also think Grace was a little too vindictive early on in the game. The puzzles were pretty good but several of them were entirely unintuitive. Still, the odd logic and bizarre things people will do in adventure games is part of the fun. As an aside, the Ludwig II museum crashed several times but everything else ran very smoothly. Since this is an FMV, I have to say that I thought the acting was pretty good. I thought they made great choices for the characters. The only other thing is that I was a little disappointed in the ending of the game. That's entirely subjective though and I can see why other people might like it. All in all, I would recommend the game. I had a lot of fun with it and the story was great; I had to know what happened next from start to finish!

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

A Great Classic

I really enjoyed this game. It has excellent writing; I particularly enjoyed all the research that went into Voodoo and how detailed it was in the game itself. It shows that the subject matter was taken seriously and the result is that everything feels more real as you play. As to the puzzles, I largely enjoyed those as well. There are a few that are arguably a bit too abstract though and that can be a little frustrating. It's hardly enough to stop me from recommending the game and it wasn't enough to make it unenjoyable either, so I would highly recommend this. The voice work is excellent, the writing is great, I liked all the characters, and it's a lot of fun to go sleuthing around. I can definitely see how it inspired other games in the same genre.
