Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville

Best simple 4X game you never heard of.

Rebuild 3 is the continuation of the flash game series of the same name that manages to deliver a unique and satisfying strategy game experience. Despite its simple origins at its heart Rebuild 3 is a 4X title and a deceptively enjoyable one. Even when layering in the most complex elements of the game it is still more simple than the vast majority of 4X titles out there. For a lot of players that might be a bad thing but Rebuild 3 has a satisfying gameplay loop with an enjoyable enough campaign and surprisingly well-tuned difficulty settings that, like with any 4X or grand strategy game you can choose how casual or difficult you want your campaign to be and in doing so the game's simplicity becomes a significant strength. While the title was clearly made with mobile devices in mind its relatively simple gameplay and low hardware demands makes it very easy to just jump headfirst into and to enjoy playing while listening to a podcast or watching a television program or chatting on a vent or what have you. It has everything you want in your core 4X experience while trimming a lot of the fat and still maintaining more personality than other games in its genre including the simultaneously delightful and dreadful "just one more turn" factor. As somebody who returns to a lot of older strategy titles like Homeworld and Masters of Orion 2 and plays a lot of popular titles like Crusader Kings 2, Civilization, Stellaris, Endless Legend, and Rimworld I still find myself coming back to Rebuild 3 even after having dumped hundreds of hours into it. Beyond that I doubly recommend Rebuild 3 if you're trying to introduce somebody into the 4X genre or strategy games in general. It might not be flashy but it has all anybody needs to get their feet wet into the genre and find out whether they enjoy what the genre has to offer or not.
