Played this in 2025 and oh boy does it hold up, after a few fixes applied thanks to PCGamingWiki, I couldn't be happier to experience this masterpiece by Ken Levine, the gameplay is reactive (and of course, immersive). This made me feel like I was in Rapture, actually exploring the run-down architecture also the descritption doesn't lie. One piece of advice.. make a lot of seperate saves.
The story is very good, the gameplay is.. luke-warm The game is built like LA noire, in the sense that there's a lot of wasted space, game has an "open world" but you're not really free to drive anywhere you want, the missions take you from point A to B and there is no time in between mission, when you're not tasked with anything. Combat is outdated, melee combat in particular. The game looks good though and the animation work is high-tier.
This is my second experience with the non-rpg entries in the AC franchise, I played AC2 before this and played some of the newer entries. I enjoyed the story thoroughly, it was smart, interesting and had a very unique style, unfortunately it does not stand the test of time when it comes to it's design decisions, there have been numerous times when I was infuriated with the useless npc's that are just designed to block your path, the controls that even on controller often didn't respond correctly to inputs, which is a shame as the combat and animations during it are extremely well done for a game made by Ubisoft.
I didn't expect to like this game, judging by the reviews it was a held back, flawed entry done by a different studio, but oh boy were my expectations surpassed. I played the modded version that reverted all of the odd additions and limitations caused by the game being primarily developed as an Xbox title, the frequent loading zones, the crappy UI etc. and I had a very pleasent experience safe for a few bugs. I actually really liked the body awareness when playing in first person, seeing my own shadow being cast by lights, having to watch out to not knock over any items off a desk, it really grounded the character in the world for me. The story was also great, a satisfying end to a franchise that I started playing around 2 years ago. Overall I really enjoyed my time with this title, not as much as the other 2 games but still a great time.
There's a ton of content here for the price, the campaign is servicable, not ground-braking but it get's the job done, the gameplay is the selling point here, the combat is fluid as butter while also being visually amazing thanks to the graphics and animation. This is a must buy even without a sale, you'll get your money's worth.
