SOMA

Not bad, not great

This game is pretty engaging, has some definite creepy-as-f*** moments and stressful horror-ish situations. But it also has a lot of wandering around in the murky darkness trying to find the one place you have to go, which got old quick. I consulted a walkthrough a couple of times to find where I had to go, and I didn't feel bad about it simply because solving problems on my own wasn't rewarding (as it is in excellent puzzle games like The Witness) and I just wanted to progress. That said the 'puzzles' are easy AF. it's just finding them that's the issue sometimes. The plot and themes are pretty interesting, reminds me of the earlier seasons of Black Mirror but not as awesomely bleak. Call it Black Mirror Lite. Would have preferred if it went deeper and darker. I was playing this on a 2012 Mac and had low graphics settings, so factor that in too. It may have been more immersive with better visuals. But IMO visuals shouldn't matter much if gameplay is up to scratch. I got it on sale and at the end of the day it was worth the $10 I spent. If I paid full price I would have been disappointed.
