Operation Body Count

This belongs in a museum of crap.

Capstone's resurgent infamy is amusing, but make no mistake that that these games are not any fun. They were notably low quality when they were new, and readily forgotten for the most part by the time Quake came around. They have their place as artefacts of some of the worst attempts to cash in on Doom and Wolfenstein's mega-stardom, but anyone who actually attempts to play these games to completion is only going to feel more dead inside afterwards than any sense of accomplishment or satisfaction. Right now I see that Heretic+Hexen Collection is on sale for £1.79, I would advise you spend your money there instead.

Blade Runner

Stone-cold classic

What a wonderful surprise! This was an all-time favourite when it was released in the late 1990's and it indeed seemed lost to the mists of time (cue a million and one "like tears in rain" jokes). Just a few days ago, it was one of the first titles I experimented with getting running on original hardware from an ISO, having lost my original discs years ago. And now here it is, rejigged for modern systems, no faffing about with Daemontools and finnicky installers anymore. Highly recommend this to both fans of the film (and, now, films!) and adventure game aficionados and indeed anyone who likes a good detective story.

System Shock® 2 (1999)

Absolutely essential

One of the finest and most revolutionary games ever made, right up there with the original Deus Ex, everything about System Shock 2 exudes class and atmosphere, and I am very happy to see it finally get a new release after all these years of publisher neglect. Anyone who has played Bioshock, Doom 3, Dead Space, and countless other titles will recognise their favourite aspects in this game, and in many ways this title still supercedes titles coming out today. On top of this, the excellent (if unfortunately unfinished) co-operative multiplayer adds a whole new dimension to the single player campaign, and should be attempted by anyone who can get it working stably.
