A very solid auto-battler strategy game. The game is easy to pick up and understand. It's a ton of fun. I don't really have any criticisms for it. It has the RNG effect since it's a roguelike, but you get to pick your commander to cater to your playstyle. I highly recommend this game!
If you come into this game expecting it to be like stronghold crusaders 1, you are going to be severely disappointed. They made the graphics and the playstyle of the game "3D" to match a playstyle similar to age of mythology, but they absolutely butchered the combat in this game. Archers shoot hugs and kisses — damage wise. The melee in this game is weird. They meet up face to face, then unorganically spread out to fight. I can't describe it much more beyond that but basically, stacking troops on top of each other to hold chokes like in the 1st game doesn't work. They did improve the physics to sieging so siege machines are a plus in this game. Aside from siege machines, combat is pure Blah. Also the 1-liners from your favorite characters aren't present in this game. If you come to this game treating it as a spinoff of the first crusaders, you'll love it. If you expect it to be a successor, you're going to be sadly letdown.
This game is a clunky souls-like with an interesting atmosphere. The combat is very VERY slow so every move has to be calculated or else be severely punished. There are many things I enjoy about the game like the art style, the atmosphere, and the gritty vibe the game gives. The game falls flat in weapon choices, noticeable power scaling (you barely feel a difference as you level), voice acting, and lack of RPG choices. This is definitely a 1-playthrough kind of game. There's charm to it, but it's missing things that would make it a cult classic (like a memorable sound track). I think it's worth the buy on sale. I wouldn't see myself paying full price for it though.
This is a lovely dark-themed pixelated turn based game. It's a horde game where you fight off wave after wave until you fight a big boss battle and win the level. The graphics are pleasant pixels, the music is metal-tastic and totally rocks, and the random generated characters say funny things when you slay the undead. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because of 2 things: 1- The controller support being wonky and buggy (I eventually gave up after an hour of trying it and resorted to using Mouse & key). 2- This game expects you to lose and replay the levels in order to win. It's disappointing when I can't strategize my way out of tough situations for a well-fought, satisfying victory. The game wants you to grind and lose so you can restart some levels stronger and win. Aside from that, the game rocks! I recommend it.
After playing the first 2 XCOM games along with their expansions, I was very excited to try this game. After giving it an honest 1-2 hours of my time, I can say this is not what I expected... Many of the things that made XCOM fun and great are not present in this game. The variety of content is lacking and the gameplay is different. Each mission you are forced to breach into buildings over & over, room by room (in comparison to XCOM 1/2 where you can choose Stealth or Go Loud). You cannot create your own characters but must use the pre-generated characters that they made for the game. Worst of all is the atmosphere of the game. The character banter is simply unbearable. It has the vibe of DEI snarky millenial humor where they mock or say something witty at any given moment in an attempt to be playful. It's very off-putting and hard to ignore. The dark, mysterious, serious grittiness that was in the first 2 xcom games is not present in this game. It truly feels like a fandom made game with the title XCOM slapped on it.
This game is pretty fun. It's not as great as Morrowind but it's still good. This game has meaningless 1-sided dialogues so story immersion isn't really there. It makes for a good RPG sandbox though. I recommend removing the cinematic camera if you play this game. It's very annoying and distracting. There's no option in the settings to do it so you have to go to the file directory. To do that, go to the skyim.ini file and copy/paste this. [VATS] bVATSDisable=1 Overall, i recommend this game!
This game reminded me of what I loved of the N64 gaming era. Pushing the envelope on shooter games at the time while creating a challenging but rewarding experience. I originally played the 2nd turok and never got to try this till now when I found it on GOG. Give this one a shot, you won't regret it!
