Completely fails at storytelling, tries to replace it with grind and RPG nonsense (there are numbers over numbers over numbers on every! single! thing! and they all need upgrading - it's mind-numbing). Even worse than Ubisoft. Do yourself a favour and get the original Everspace game instead. That is tight and focused and fun - this is not.
