I have had a ton of fun with this game. I'm about a dozen hours in so far and I do agree that this game is one of those that is what you make of it. You have to set your own goals and go for them. My current goal is to learn enough of a language to understand most words spoken to me. So far I have about 150 words learned in one of the languages. I know a lot of people are having technical trouble but I personally have not had a single crash or slowdown with this game. It runs perfectly and has done so litterally 10 minutes after it was released which is how long it took me to get it downloaded and up and running... and I don't have a top of the line computer. It's good... but it's not brand new by any means. I understand your frustration if you can't play it... but I can and it is an excellent game with an intriguing future storyline. I will be playing it for a long time to come.
I've been looking for some way to bring back that feeling of the old Privateer or Freelancer games. Nothing I've tried recently has kept my attention for very long... but I keep trying. So I picked up yet another in this little game... and it works. It's just plain fun. First off on the 2D flight. Yea sure it sounds like a turn-off. I can understand that. But it's fun. It really is fun and unique. I know it sounds like a lack of realism and all that and I can understand your hesitancy. But at the end of the day we're playing these games to have fun and I just love the broadsides feel. It's a refreshing and interesting take that works for me. Music. Holy crap the awesome music. If "Space Western" doesn't sound good to you then maybe you won't like this, but if you were a Firefly or Cowboy Beebop fan... then this just fits in that genre really well and the music brings the perfect atmosphere. It really is phenomenal. The story so far is intriguing. I'll update more when I get further along. It has promise but I can't vouch for the whole thing yet so I'll just say... promising so far. It makes me feel like the original Privateer did. I know something weird is going on and I really want to find out more. Other than all that the same space goodness exists. Missions, cargo, pirates, etc. Go watch some youtube gameplay. That's what I did and it convinced me to try it out.
If you like turn based tactics games, then you will love this game. If you hate them... then don't bother. If you don't know much about tactics games and want to give one a try, then this is a good option. Solid story, solid tactics games. It has a few hiccups like inventory management but most people who really like tactics games won't be put off by that. I didn't even notice it as an issue until I read a review complaining about it. I like the humor and I like the characters. The story is entertaining, and there are a decent variety of weapon types to choose from. Also please note that the director's cut is a vast improvement over the base game. Base wasn't bad, but the director's cut does a lot of little things that make your life easier and also adds in a ton of extra voice acting. All in all I highly recommend this game unless you just can't take turn based tactics games.
