RC Cars

Fast-paced, Fun, and Frustrating!

Great to finally play this game without the need for a CD! It is REALLY fast-paced, and that is what makes this such a fun time killer. It won't take too long before things start to seem repetitive, but in a good way (familiarity with the tracks, etc). The game is driven by 18 LOUD metal and electronic music tracks that are pretty good, and perfect for the game. The physics isn't terribly realistic and there is no crash damage, so this one is all about reaching the finish line first. It's fun to ram into the jerks who like to kick your car though. The game can be intensely frustrating because just one little teeny weeny error can instantly send you from first place into last place. That is what keeps you coming back for more ("This time I'll win for sure!"). You can add your own faces as .TGA files to create your own avatars (see the manual). You can play quick races or go through the championship series and upgrade your car. This is a simple game, but has been one of my very favorites since it first came out. Plays smooth on any machine - including my tiny little Atom-powered netbook. Graphics hold up well for an older game. Highly recommended for fast paced fun, great music, and good humor. Just be warned - when you quit the game you'll feel hyped and exhausted as if you just ran in the Olympics. The gameplay really is that intense.

Destroy All Humans! Demo

Fantastic, but meet the specs!

I was all smiles when GOG finally made Destroy All Humans available. Been waiting for this a long, long time! The graphics are great (better than the original I would say). The dry humor and Nicholson-esque delivery of Crypto 137 immediately took me back to when I played this for so many hours on a PS2 way back when. This was the height of nostalgia for me. Unfortunately, the game itself was almost unplayable on my PC.... The cut scenes play fine, but the mouse is so sluggish and inaccurate that I can't control the cursor or weapons. When you're in the saucer, the same applies, and the saucer often gets lost in the tree tops rather than flying above them. Granted, my system is a bit old and not up to the specs - I have a desktop PC with i7 2600 CPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM, an SSD, and an AMD Radeon HD 6700 graphics card. I would also agree with another reviewer that the character voices sometimes seem a bit dry or out of place in the mix. Having said that, I'll still buy the full version since I intend to upgrade my PC anyway. As long that that fixes the sloppy cursor issue, you'll get a real hoot out of this fun game if your computer meets the specs! I already own the fantastic soundtrack to this game, but I hope they'll release that as well on GOG so others can enjoy it too. There are some really fun remixes in that soundtrack.

Oh...Sir!! The Insult Simulator

This could have been great

The idea here is made for laugh out loud fun - an insult war. Its kind of like a rap battle without the music. Unfortunately there are many flaws in the execution: the British humor doesn't always tickle Americans' funny bones (except for Monty Python references), the dictionary of words and phrases to choose from is small and cannot be modified by the user, the scoring scheme is incomprehensible, the scenarios are repetitive, and you must endure the same long and tedious before and after discussions between the characters each time you battle. On the other hand the characters are fun, with excellent voiceovers (especially one inspired by Sean Connery). There is a bit of strategy involved when you create insults that target your opponent's unique vulnerability. The game runs smoothly on my Windows 8.1 laptop. The truth is, for all its flaws I sometimes find myself laughing even at insults I've heard before in the game. For that reason I keep it installed for when I need to kill 5 or 10 minutes. If it weren't for that use I would have given this only 2 stars. I wish a developer would take this idea and flesh it out with a huge dictionary, more scenarios, a modern user interface, the ability to add your own words and phrases (which would require excellent voice synthesis rather than prerecorded audio), and the ability to render your favorite insults to mp3 or WAV audio. That would be just tons of innocent fun, and useful for audio producers!
