...but I have to agree with several other reviewers that the game gets repetetive and boring. As others said before, there are some cool features. However I didn't like the diamond hunt. It takes focus from the story imho. And all this driving drove me crazy. The real game breaker for me was the colour scheme. We're in Africa for god's sake! Where are the colours? There's a blue sky at times but the rest of the colours where pale brownish-greenish even in full sunshine. I expected the same vivid colours as in the first installement of FarCry that I played just a few days earlier. Yes, there's a war going on but even during a war there's still a lot of colours. The explosions where nice though. Storywise I liked it but it could have been so much more interesting and immersing if they put more effort in the story and less in diamond and safe house hunting and let dead enemies stay dead. If I won a stronghold, that should belong to me and my buddies. One of the things I really hated was the maps. It just didn't make sense to me to have three different maps that obscured your vision. Other games have done it so much better. Most of them rely on pushing "M" on the keyboard, which pauses the game and lets you have a look. I don't know how many times I was attacked while looking at the map in FC2. Weapons. There are almost too many to chose from so don't get carried away. I managed to get through the game with a pistol, a sniper rifle and a crossbow. But it sure wasn't easy...
I got this game for free at another place and thought I might share some of my thoughts about it here. It might be because I'm a fan of dystopian stories but I fell in love with this game rather instantly. The background story felt like it could happen in a near future. I'm old enough to have seen some signs of things that are in the the game, actually happening in the real world. The radio station added to the atmosphere even if I felt that the loop was bit short. A few more stories in the show would have been nice. The graphics suited the game even if I personally would have preferred them a wee bit darker. Game itself was simple with some funny surprises and shortcuts here and there and I don't think I've found them all yet. I didn't have any problems with the lack of consistency regarding the strokes since I saw them as part of the challenge. This game is more "a story told" than anything else but personally I loved it. I won't give the game five stars since it was too short but otherwise I recommend it for anyone who fancies a great story.
...or the fact that I've since childhood loved everything about evolution of man and animals, but I loved this game from the start. I found it intelligent, challenging and a real treat for me as it coincides with my interests. No, the game doesn't help you much, but once you remember that our early ancestors probably used rocks, sticks and plants quite early in their road to evolve into humans, it gets a lot easier. Once you start exploring your surroundings, pick stuff up and examine them, you realize that there actually is a tutorial in the form of the HUD. It tells you what you can do with the picked up object and once you've examined them, that there are options with some of them. You just have to figure them out. The reasons why I don't give this game five stars are the following: Once you've learned to do something, you shouldn't have to repeat it over and over again. I can make this tool? Ok, then I shouldn't have to bang endlessly with this rock over and over again. It gets tedious and boring. Where did that damn cat get through my defenses? It spawns right in the middle of my camp. I know cats are good at stalking, but this is ridiculous. Why are my clan members so stupid? They stand and freeze out in the cold rain instead of joining me in my cozy cave. Other than that, I've played this game through several times and will do so years to come. Unless there comes a better game, because I would love to continue the jouney at least up Cro-Magnon.
That's kinda fresh if you ask me. I had this game installed for quite some time before I finally decided to play it through. Since I'm 60+ years old, I'm old enough to have noticed that winters in my part of the world have become increasingly warmer and wetter. Maybe that's why the game appealled to me. I love cartoons. I love cartoonish games. "A New Beginning" fulfilled most of my expectations in that respect. I liked the puzzles. I loved most of the caracters. The story was, with a couple of exceptions, believable. Graphics: One of the few things that really disturbed me was how the female protagonist walked and stood. I don't know if it was meant to be sexy but in my eyes it just looked ridicolous. Other than that the graphics reminded me very much of my teenage comic books. Yes, that's a good thing. Sound and music: Completely ok in my book. Story: The game was released in 2010, and I'm playing it 11 years later, but the topics it touches has become more and more of a reality. Some people might find it pushing the message about climate change down their throats but that doesn't stop the story from being good. To sum it up: I've played better games and a hell of a lot worse.
...I loved the story in AW and might have liked this too, if it had been just a little more believable and not quite so repetative as AW:AN is. Everything was as expected after the main game: graphics, weapons, foes, music and surroundings. Everything except the story and the three female characters. I agree with those who say that this was a lazy excuse for a game. It could have been so much more.
I'm an old guy, pushing towards my sixties. I've had this game installed on my computer for a long time but never got around to play it. Until now. Graphics: They are beginning to be a tad bit dated, but so am I. I won't complain about them as I don't require life-like facial expressions to enjoy a game. For me, they worked just fine. The story: It suited me just perfectly, as I'm a long time hardcore fan of Stephen King. As old and experienced I am, I still almost wet my pants on several occassions during game play. I hate flocks of birds... Those other scary things? Not so much. The controls: I agree with other reviewers that these absolutely could have been better and more responsive. Still, I really never had any major problems with them, although I did die sometimes because of them. If you can't see toyr enemy, you die. Simple as that. That's why I gave the game four stars instead of five. However, there was one thing I was impressed by = the cars. Many games where one can drive a car, and that includes many racing games, could learn a lot from how cars behave in Alan Wake. As an experienced driver myself, this was the first time I've played a game where the cars actually felt quite real in their behaviour.
...the slow games are the best games. Sometimes it's fun to frantically shoot zombies in their heads and sometimes... As I've always loved travelling but never got the funds to make longer journeys, I've instead read a lot of stories about travelling, using my imagination. This game is relaxing and still fun. For me it's also a good way of learning another language, as english is not my mother tongue. The only critisism I have are for the pictures. I expected a bit better pictures from the various locations, from inside train stations and airports, maybe a few animations to give an illusion of travelling. Aside from that, if you want to relax a bit and maybe learn something, buy the game.
I've wanted to write a review for a long time now, being a member of GOG for many years. I was cleaning out my computer when I realised I had a LOT of old games I hadn't played for years. Fallout was one of them. This was the first game I truly enjoyed, loved and played more than once. It's still sitting on my gaming shelf. Believe it or not, but I bought the game, without ever having heard anything about it and without knowing anything of what kind of game it was. It was a couple of years after it's initial release and about two years after Fallout 2. Possibly in 2001, close to my 41 birthday, I walked around in a store completely unaware that my life was about to change. I walked up to the stores stock of downsized items and found a heap of PC-games. Among those I found Fallout at the amazing price of $1.5. I bought that game and a few others, went home and started to play... Luckily I began with Fallout. As soon as I realized that this was a real gem I started to google it and found out that there was a second game! I went back to the store and managed to find Fallout 2 too! And that's where my long love affair with Fallout started. I loved the humor. I admired the story. And though I own all the games in the series it's still the first game I cherish. I'm pushing towards my sixties and on my birthday I will celebrate by playing Fallout for the 'nth time... It's better than cake. So, this was my first review. I can't think of any of my games that deserves this more.
I first played this game about a year after it's release and boy did I love it! The system I had at the time was in no way a gaming system but a run of the mill Windows 98 office computer. However, that didn't matter because the game still ran smooth as heck and albeit I couldn't have the highest resolution it still looked awesome. I can vividly remember the first time I got out of the Vortex Rikers and stood by the edge of the cliff and looked down. What a view! That experience, on a 14" screen, is still what I compare every FPS with. I still have my original game. However, I couldn't get it to work properly on my W7 system. Enter GOG. And it worked. However... Already at the beginning I became disappointed. What the f... was this? The original game had a beautiful beginning where I could choose my avatar. In this version I have to go into an ugly window to do the same thing. And the avatars are extremely ugly too. I've had numerous issues when saving my progress. The game just didn't want to save! I had to play the whole game in one setting! (I did pause the game for sleep, dinner, breakfast and such ;) ) The atmosphere was still there. The levels are as brilliant as the first time I played it. I still love the game. However... I'm sitting here with an fairly good Pc with a fairly good graphic card. It takes on new games without hesitation. Still, this game chugged at a higher resolution than 600*800, I can't change the brightness. The game is still worth it.
