So, first off, this is basically its own game. Technically, it's a DLC, true, but it contains it's own story, unique mechanics, etc, and you don't need the original in order to play. There's actually a lot of character growth and side story action that is surprising considering the length of the game. Every character that you interact with has their own little background and side story that unfolds as you go. It adds a layer of depth that you simply don't expect from a shooter like this. That said, here are the pros and cons: Pros: -Wish fulfillment -Great fun - Interesting mechanics - Good story Cons: - Some of the ragdoll physics are kinda sketchy - The AI is dumb. They just run at you. The game is made harder by throwing different kinds of enemies at you in waves. Eventually, they spawn behind you sometimes, and that can make things difficult. This game would have almost unlimited replay value if the AI were intelligent
I grew up playing MW2,3,and 4 in the 90's and 2000's. This game is a wonderful continuance of that genre. Listen, if you want hard core 'Mech combat mixed with the grunge work of handling a "small" business, this is epic! I can't recommend this game enough for anyone. As a side note, I run it on Linux through Bottles/WINE-GE and it runs great!
I will never claim that this is the most perfect game ever. Compare it to Homeworld and it just falls flat. However, left on its own merits, I can honestly say that I recommend it. No, it's not the most polished nor is the game play the best ever. But what it is is: Fun. I had a blast playing this game, despite the odd interface, the guard command that doesn't work, and having to micromanage the herd of ships that behave more like sheep than wolves. I'd love to see this concept expanded upon and the story broadened, but, for now, I got my money's worth and I recommend this game to anyone that is looking for a strategy game that has a little extra in it.
So I bought this because I had just beaten The Ur-Quan Masters(again) and it didn't quite scratch my Star Control itch enough. I'll tell you that if you're expecting some kind of clone of SCII, you will be disappointed. It was also extremely easy. That said, I enjoyed the story, and it actually was exactly what I needed at the time. The game is only loosely set in the SC universe. They keep alluding to "something" killing off all the sentients. We can assume that this is the Kor-Ah. That's awesome, but I haven't seen anything that explains why there's all these aliens near Earth that aren't there in the very next game... So yeah, there's some disconnect between SC:O and SCII. That said, I gave the game four stars because I really did enjoy the game on its own merits. It had several giggle-worthy moments, a fun and diverse cast of species, and the combat was really fun. For the price that I paid, I feel that I got a good value. If you are looking for a space opera RPG, here you go. This will do until Children of Infinity comes out.
