This is a very good point-and-click adventure. Not so much the laughing experience of, say, Monkey Island or Deponia, but rather a thought through story which holds up almost all the way through in the style of the early Broken Sword games. The puzzles are logical, and if you're an experienced pointer-and-clicker you won't run into too much trouble, but if you're new to the concept you might get stuck in a few places - a pleasant frustration if you ask me. Coherent characters and a well-written story-line keeps the game interesting even if you find some of the puzzles on the easy side. Like many good novels, it takes some time to get to know the characters (maybe an hour of gameplay or so), but when you pass this stage, you're swept into the story and can't really put it down. The game-play is very 'traditional' for its genre, and certainly appeals to me. Now, there are a few flaws here and there, and a loose end or two that doesn't get resolved, but 'A New Beginning' really spoke to me. Anyone who enjoys a good adventure game story-line (on a hot topic!) would really like this game.
This game has just what I'm looking for in a point-and-click adventure! Witty dialogues, well-composed environments and a protagonist with so much character he's impossible to forget! Now, I haven't played very may games of this kind lately, but it sure beats Telltale Games' productions by leagues! If anything, the puzzles are sometimes a tad too obvious, but I have to admit I actually got stuck for several hours at a couple places - a challenge I definitely enjoy. As some people have ponted out, the Deponia is maybe on the short side time-wise, but it in my opinion it has almost the same replay value as Monkey Island 1-3, which I've bee through dozens of times. Another comment is that the background music sometimes gets rather annoying, especially if you spend a lot of time in the same scene. An easy /mute fixes this. If you're looking for a more traditional pointer-and-clicker in a a fresh suit and without all the hard-to-manoeuvre "3D-just-for-the-sake-of-it" that's been popping up lately, this is definitely a game worth every penny!
First a few kind words: This game has a lot of cherishable moments, especially for fans of the franchise. As some of the previous reviews have already stated, the storyline is a brilliant add-on to the movie series, with a consistent plot and quite a few flirts with the well-known BttF universe. The voice acting is also nothing less than amazing. However - these are the only highlights of this game. As other reviews have already pointed out most of my opinions, I'll just make a check-list: -Controls are lousy -"Puzzles" are on a 7-10 yr-old's level -Game world is very small -Dialogues are long and redundant -Inventory is messy -Playing time is short, and to >50% spent on dialogues and cut-scenes -Many invisible barriers in environment Overall, my playing experience was almost exclusively spent cursing over the many flaws, and I completely forgot about the up-sides while playing. Do not expect a traditional adventure game, and do NOT expect a challenge. This could perhaps -if the controls were better - be a nice family game after seeing the movies together, but I would not recommend this game to anyone.
