This is a very faithful adaptation of the Lovecraft short story by the same name. The build up is reasonably slow, and that's just the way it should be. I found myself loving the daily struggle of being broke, having to study and get good grades, working on Gilman's thesis, studying the occult... a really good student simulator in its own right. But it is still story driven, and there are multiple endings available - including two good endings (well, a good and an evil one), which is not how the original story ends. Easily one of my favourite Lovecraftians.
Anyone who played strategy games in the '90s knows of the Warlord games. Particularly the first one, but Warlords III is - as one might expect - a more polished version. Not that the AI is anything to write home about, and combat is still pretty simplistic, but this game has aged well even so. I was pleased to find that I enjoy it just as much today as I did some 20 years ago, and I don't think that's all nostalgia. Even back then it was not at all the best strategy game I had played, but it was just so lovable all the same.
