Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered

Still going strong

Red Faction: Guerrilla always has been, and still is, the very best demolition game in existence. I know because I've looked far and wide, being a physics-obsessed gamer, but none even come close. As a result, RFG has a remarkable replay value and a powerful, unique gaming experience. In no other game will you see buildings realistically collapse in such a thoroughly simulated and accurate manner. No other game will convey the sheer awe of toppling a giant structure or the sheer danger of standing too close. You will die when debris smacks you in the face, and it will be hilarious every time. My only qualm with the game, and this is common critique, is poor firefights. Due to a simple flaw in the game's XML tables, much of the game was spent shooting baddies who refused to go down. This is easily solved, however: I strongly suggest you check the latest mods after getting this game. You'll probably notice I'm a modder myself, so apologies if this seems like self-advertising, but the game missed much of its potential due to time constraints - constraints which I managed to circumvent by collaborating with other modders and taking my time throughout the years. On top of that, the remaster is excellent. Forget lazy retexturing, this is a real remaster with substantial new features and graphics. With this in mind, I cannot recommend RF:G RMT more. It deserves to be among the most popular games even today, in 2021.

TerraTech

TerraTech: Brilliant yet crude

TerraTech is brilliant and unique. It is also inefficient on a technical level, demanding more from your PC's hardware than necessary, as is unfortunately common in the Voxel gaming world. A block building based RTS which includes resource management, exploration, vehicle design, progression through XP points and quests and, of course, combat, all seen from the perspective of your own creations. No overhead view, unless you build one. Side note: IGNORE the other reviews claiming this game has a DLC you need to buy. It only adds experimental (unfinished) blocks and a free build mode (end-game already features this). YOU DO NOT NEED IT. In fact, using this DLC may invite more bugs. The Good: Resources Resource management is unique as every "chunk" of resources is visually rendered at (almost) all times - wood drops from the tree, then gets sucked onto a transport vehicle's traction beam, then gets transferred to the base, moved along a conveyor and finally put to use: Crafting or selling. In the latter case, the chunk is blasted into orbit using a cannon! The Good: Exploration Ah, that feeling when you first take to the skies and start mapping out your surroundings. Most like to build on the Salt Flats, which provides a flat surface for easy building and defense, but some prefer the resource-rich Mountains and advanced, more rewarding defense. In any case, you'll spend a lot of time just moving around, looking for something to do or perhaps complete an objective - and you can do so gloriously. No limits, full freedom. Open-world in the truest sense. The Bad: AI Only turrets have usable AI currently, though improvements are planned. Vehicle Combat AI is likely just a placeholder, and a Gathering AI button is visible (but greyed out). The Bad: Performance TerraTech is also highly inefficient, particularly on non-Intel hardware. This game requires a medium/high-end, mainstream-built PC, and even then you'll find your base building limited by the game's performance.
