In the genre of puzzle games, strategies, and games that try to freak you out with shock moments and sudden flash evvents. In all of that hayday, you have this little gem. I played this when I was in high school. It took me two days ot beat it, and I loved every warped second of it. The final level made me sweat cold fear. It required skill, patience, time, and intuition. All told, one of the most mind invasive games I have ever played. It will haunt you when you close your eyes.
This series was one of the rare gems of the early PC age. Though only Part 2 still has the origional interface, the spirit of the first game was upheld and emboldened with their changes. The spirit of the games remain the same, all these decades later. Not only was it one of the first games to offer multiple class selection, it also allowed one to "spend points" to increase stats before even starting. From Part 2 onward, a fourth class opens, the Paladin. Add into this a rich tapestry of story, memorable characters and locations, and this series is one of the best puzzle rpgs to date.
