Skyrim is the easiest comparison. Amalur has better exploration, a lot less bug (doesn't mean no bug, try to manual save every hour or half hour in case of quest breaking bug), a splendid pacing with quests and exploration, a pretty competent medfan story with interesting oddities (especially the emphasis on the fae), very satisfying combat and character progression. This game is best enjoyed with a nice podcast during the exploration phases.
198X is so promising. It's pure nostalgia, the faux retro games are very cool, the music's amazing and the pixel looks great. Why only two stars then? Because it's just a demo. There are 4 "levels" and the story only gets started when we're treated to a "to be continued"! I strongly believe that people overestimate the length of game compared to the quality of the experience, but when even the narrative barely gets the time to start, you've got a problem, even for an indie game. I didn't even expect the devs to make up a new game for each chapter, discovering new levels for the ones in this demo would be very fair to me (and maybe mixing them up at the end?). But as it stands, this is a prologue. That's not ok.
I love modern supernatural World of Darkness style stories, and this is IT! The main intrigue is excellent, the individual cases really interesting, and I loved all the NPCs (making the team choices hard and a replay of the game indispensable). Plus, the origin stories Dragon Age Origin style add a lot to it! I guess it's not for the people who play adventure for mind breaking rage inducing moon logic puzzles, here they're just hard enough to feel like we're the ones advancing the story. Just play it!
Kathy Rain has a ton of charm, the protagonist is fun and engaging, the 90s Twin Peaks atmosphere works great, good voice acting, nice pixel art. More importantly the puzzles are logical and somewhat engaging, no moon logic bullshit or pace breaking difficulty.
OK I just finished still life, and there are good and bad. The good part is the ambiance and various esthetics, like Prague and the paintings. The idea of two similar investigations in two time periods is very cool. The bad, well first of all there will be pixel hunting, and a lot of Guide Dang It. This is a walkthrough : http://www.gameboomers.com/wtcheats/pcSs/stilllife.htm, you WILL need it. Some voice acting is terrible (that cop, and Mia, damn :( ) and some story points are rather cliché.
