realMYST

You will be lost in this dreamscape; but not as much in 3D

I haven't played Myst before I became a member of the GoG community, so this review won't include any nostalgia induced opinions. I have always wanted to play Myst, so I was really glad that the game was so readily made available by GoG. However, it wasn't easy to pick between RealMyst (which, ironically, isn't actually the real Myst, but rather a remake) and the actual Masterpiece Edition of Myst. I am sure that most potential buyers first decide to get this version (just like me) because they imagine a more immersive gameplay experience due to the 3D graphics that enable easier movement and more open-ended exploration. In my opinion, this is not the case, but that doesn't mean that it isn't for anybody. It is for you to decide which one will entertain you more, but let me put things into perspective. Masterpiece edition has nicer environments, even though you might think they are the same (which they are.. except one world). This is a fact because the 3D environments were not made at a time that offered great-3D-graphics. It doesn't look bad at all, but it still wasn't enough to convey the magic that the (this might sound stupid) PICTURES had in the original Myst. That is actually the only thing that separates the two games. So, depending on your gameplay-preferences, you might prefer one over the other. If you want a non-on-rail-experience (is that what you call it?) get RealMyst since it gives you a lot more freedom in movement. If you are like me and want to be truly immersed in a game, get the lovely MASTERpiece edition. As for the game itself, it is perfect for my standards. If you like First Person Adventures (compare it to one of the newer Sherlock Holmes games), you will simply love this game. Dialog is almost non-existent, and you don't have to combine any items with each other. This is truly from a FIRST PERSON perspective, as it is YOU that is the character. It is actually a role-playing game since you take on the role of this random person that is simply given 'the mission' to get out of their for your own sake. By reading books or just finding random pieces of paper, you uncover why these fantasy worlds exist and learn about their history and past inhabitants. I can't explain the magic that this game has to offer... But if you are a person that values fantasy and just wants to experience something overwhelmingly beautiful, there is not reason not to get any version of Myst 1. It is short (the puzzles are all solvable and they aren't hard ...MOSTLY!) , but it is great! Just a warning! After you've played through Myst, you won't be able to keep yourself from immediately buying Riven (which is Myst 2)! HAVE FUN!
