Mount & Blade

Half Perfect Half Missing

Fun little title until you realize how much is missing. "Wouldn't it be great if you could do this or that" rapidly dawns into, "oh you can do those things in the Warband edition". So yes it's a fine game but you'll end up wanting to play the Warband edition so do that instead and skip this.

Console Game Wannabe

I can see how some people might like this sort of game so I give it a begrudging second star. This is the sort of game console gamers love as it requires a mind fully in neutral. If you like lots of frequent, long, badly written cut scenes, push the button to advance the story reflex challenges, narrow corridors funneling you towards the next cutscene, and games that play themselves while you button mash, THIS IS THE GAME FOR YOU! This thing is terrible. Obfuscated control scheme (the only real interactive game play in the game is figuring out how the game works) hides a boring grindy button masher (console cliche) which so many cliche's from the console gaming world I can only imagine that was their inspiration. I wasn't pleased when I discovered that I could defeat hoards of enemies before I knew what had happened because the auto-aim features (console cliche) are so hand-holdy they fling you from one enemy to another even if you weren't aware they existed. Did I mention the grindy? Because in between boss battles where you employ your skills to puzzle solve (console cliche) that's all you do. Yes, it's the console cliche of grinding through enemies. What tore it from me was the "escape the dragon" bit. It really sums up the game nicely. You're being attacked by a dragon so what do you do? Hit the S button. Keep hitting it. Just put your finger on it and take a nap. Dodging is a scripted event in the exciting ESCAPE THE DRAGON sequence! Just a really horrible game whose hype has given it legs it does nothing to earn. I got the thing for free and still feel ripped off.
