Escort Missions Ruin the Experience

I was somewhat enjoying the early game as a spy thriller fps with some stealth elements and a cool European comic art style but the first major issue with the game made itself known quickly: awful checkpoints. There is a general lack of them and those you do get are placed at some of the worst possible points forcing you to rewatch unskipable cutscenes over and over again or making you go through long and slow sections of the level again before getting to the more difficult sections. All said and done it wasn't all that bad until the part where you have to rescue a General and escort him to safety. The only word I can use to describe the A.I. of said character is suicidal. While you're busy dealing with the enemies attacking you, he just runs into their face and gets mowed down in half a second. And by AMAZING design, you have to go through a section of the level again, some air ducts with a long detour to get some items you'll want to have for the part ahead and TWO freaking cutscenes. The only way I managed to get passed this part is by rushing ahead, learning enemy locations by trial and error, and throwing grenades at each one of them. The level after has you still escorting this genius with a section where you have to defend him while he takes "cover" on a wall outside a building that you just came out of, directly exposed to where the enemies are coming from. He dies in half a second. That's where I quit playing, and "game is old" is not an excuse. Half-life and Halo came out before this. So disappointing.
