Noelle Does Her Best!

Exactly what it looks like ...

... and that's perfectly fine. It's a fairly standard RPGMaker style game, it's a fairly standard theme - sexy fun with a fairly thin veneer of a game. Price may be a little high for what it is, but definitely not deserving of the hate a couple of prudes wishing to force their version of morality seem to think it is. It's not 'an underage sex simulator' or anything close.

BloodRayne (Legacy)

Half-vampire, Nazi-killing, smart talking seductress... what's not to like?

I own the physical version of this excellent game (much better than the sequel, though I still enjoy that enough to not feel too bad about it and WAY better than the awful film made off the back of this IP) but aside from the DRM removal I don't think there's any real difference. Rayne is likable and often funny, some of that humour coming from wise-cracks at 'innapropriate' moments and quite a lot of sexual innuendo (developers knew their market and with all the blood and guns it was never aiming for a family-friendly certificate..), the bad guys are unequivaocably bad and you feel not a single twinge of remorse as you butcher most of them, in fact only the early German soldiers could even begin to seem innocent, in a 'just following my orders, trying to feed my family' kind of way, the rest are supernaturally evil scum and make tasty snacks, too! The controls are mostly intuitive although the camera can be a bit annoying at times, probably thanks to the parallel development for consoles (it's not a port, as such, but clearly some aspects of the engine were not slated for any changes) and you'll soon get the hang of your blades and shooting while feeding. The ability to slow your perception of time is gained quite early (and you need it, believe me!) which allows you to do some pretty 'cool' manoeuvres, like feeding while dodging bullets and using enemies as meat-shields. The later combats can get pretty tough and there is a certain amount of puzzle-solving in the form of platform-jumping, also Rayne does NOT like water. A lot. So several levels have her jumping about a bit with the danger of a painful dunking being ever-present. The plot? Essentially it's "kill the supernatural nasties that started out as Nazi but messed with things man should never know and became something else" which translates to 'kill em all', in practice and this is just fine - Rayne is a supernatural killing-machine as as well as a supernatural-killing machine (sorry, couldn't resist!) so what else would you want her to do (well, okay, but that's another certificate entirely and some rather different 'gameplay' ;¬) )? Negatives? Controls can be awkward but you'll soon have it licked, camera too has issues but you'll quickly get used to it and be able to work with it. The combat can get repetitive if you don't experiment and some "boss" battles are hard, especially if you don't know the right strategy to kill it. That's about it, to be honest. Positives? Graphics are pretty enough, especially if you use modern cards and drivers to enhance them with high levels of anti-aliasing and anisotropy. The voice acting isn't half-bad, I certainly enjoyed Rayne's voice and lines. The story, such as it is, is enjoyable enough with cutscenes here and there giving you a little more insight into Rayne and the Brimstone Society she works for, without ever getting in the way and you can completely ignore it because the game is essentially a 'first person shooter/hacker/biter/kicker' with a pretty character model. It's replayable, pretty much endlessly, so long as you're in the mood for kicking some Nazi butt and want to chop up anyone unfortunate enough to come into range. The price? Absolute bargain, I paid £25, as I recall, and didn't feel at all cheated; obviously for that I got a case, manual, pretty-looking disc, etc, etc but even so, at this price it's a steal and for my money (quite literally) it stands up to an awful lot of current releases and sneers at them in a sexy southernesque drawl.
