I have this game on Steam. In fact, I've had it since it was in early access. It is going to compared to Slay the Spire (arent they all) and I enjoy this more than STS I enjoy its graphics more and I find it slightly easier than Slay the Spire. My only complaint is that I'm getting tired of the developers putting their game first on Steam only, then when sales level off they offer it on GOG (most likely due to DRM issues). I would much prefer to have a GOG copy and I'm getting tired of having to buy I game twice because of this practice.
I am writing this review to somewhat balance out the idiots who know nothing of this game and rate it one star because of its price. I don't own this game, it is too hardcore for me but having been a wargamer for decades I can tell you that this game is recognized as being the ultimate war game for grognards (if you don't know what a grognard is then this game is not for you). One playthrough of the grand campaign can take weeks or months. I am honestly shocked that Slitherine has allowed this game to go on sale for 75% off. I don't recall it ever being that cheap. I'm considering buying it on sale even though I know I'll never play it because it is too hardcore for me.
I have this game on Steam's early access program. I have not played it a great deal because I like to wait until a game is complete. It is what it says it is, a D&D sandbox battle simulator. Think of it a D&D gladiatorial game. Anyway, you can mini-max to your heart's content and the battles are fairly short. One word of warning if you are like me and wait until a game is complete before playing it, you may be in for a long wait because this game been under development forever.
I thoroughly enjoy this game along with Pike & Shot and Field of Glory II (also on GOG). The positives (and negatives) of the game have already been covered in previous reviews, however, there is one thing I'd like to add. All three of the previously mentioned games have an easy to use workshop like function built into the game. You can just press a link in the title screen, a list of user scenarios appears from which you can select and download. The user scenarios for Pike & Shot and Field of GloryII are quite numerous but the one for this title is very small (from memory - less than 5?). I don't believe you will regret buying the, especially at its sale price.
I got this during its Early Access period on Steam. I did not play it much till it was released and it was a pleasant surprise being a fantastic game with really fun tactical battles. I am a little irritated that it is now being released on GOG because I would have much preferred a GOG copy to a Steam one. I guess I'll have to buy it again later down the road when it is on sale with a large discount.
My rating would be more accurate at 3.5 stars. I agree with most of whats been mentioned in the previous reviews such as the game being a uninspired clone of SMAC, However, I did want to mention that with the addition of its expansion (included in the GOG version) this game has one of the best strategic AI in recent gaming. It will kick some serious butt. And contrary to a previous comment made in another review, I have never read that the AI cheats. I've read people accuse the AI of cheating but these accusations were shown by the developer and others as being false. The AI was simply kicking their rear end. So ending. if you are looking for an updated SMAC you will be disappointed but if your just looking for a good war game you will likely enjoy it.
I'm going to keep this short due to me not being the best writer. The game is great with a x-com type feel. As the ring leader your job will include accepting contracts, hiring mercs, equipping them, etc... You will feel the death of your "brothers" and believe me; they will die. I have the game on steam and I wish I had known it was going to have been released here.
