Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

Wait for a sale if your thinking of it.

It started out really good that eased you well into the gameplay. Graphics, voice acting, etc the presentation and story are excelent. Though thes story is really predictable. Good aside the main problems and why I couldn't bring myself to finish is when you play more and get closer to mid game. The level design and gameplay can get extremly annoying as in it heavily encourages you to spam the quick save feature more than you should. Now as a stealth game there really should be multiple options for appoaching a objective. In this game with the enemy layout and abilities it behaves like a puzzle. There really is only one way to solve the puzzle of getting through the enemies. With every other possability being way to hard. And even then the solution to the puzzle requires very specific inputs and requires more clicks per minute style speed to pull off without setting off alarms. And you still will need to reload saves as the controls and pathfinding can be a bit akward to manage. After a while you notice these issues really itch ya more and more leading to gradually declining fun factor as the game goes on. These issues can be resolved by improved map layout and level design. As with the different enemy types and abilities of your characters it should be a fun game. But the level design and control issues making quick save spamming necessary to avoid restarting the whole level really kills to fun factor. I can only suggest this to people that are long time fans of these games with bit more experience in this genre of stealth, and wait for a sale.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated

Happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy!

Exactly what I want from the remastered and more. Multiplayer is a nice addition, gameplay is well polished with a hicup in the patrick boss fight where the camera can be a annoyance when swinging as sandy. But that's about it. None of the movement or platforming problems in the original. Few if any bugs from what I've encountered, one or two minor animation glitches which is a simple fix. One thing I will say is I wish there was more control over graphics options though you can run this game on anything. An easy buy if you like platformers as the amount of improvements and little details added such as the excelent animation quality in dialogue really make this a easy to buy remastered.

Phantom Doctrine

Solid game with a few design flaws.

For those who like turn based games this will catch your interest. Combat is pretty good requiring a lot of thought into every action which is nice. Complimenting the sandbox feel of the missions. Not to mention there is tangeble benefits from collecting the collectables in game. In the way of vital intel and loot to give you things like new agents, weapons, gandgets, etc. Does get repetitive as you do get a certain rythem going making stealth a little easy until later on where you have to be a bit more careful with who you kill and in what order. Combat does have some rng which can be frustrating mainly with the dodging mechanic. Providing that one rng frustration. Customization is solid with a lot of options to chose from which is always welcome. AI is actually quite good once you get into combat. Rewarding careful actions as rushing tends to get your agents killed. Maps while well designed for combat. For stealth they can be easily navigated due to seeing where a enemy is going to walk in a predictable pattern which I'd argue makes it to easy for a strategy game. Not to mention stealth actually penalizes xp which baffles me as it forces you to do combat to level up with any kind of speed. Story to me is satisfctory enough to get you to continue. Its not going to wow you, as its more of "its fine" kind of good. Enjoyable just not the most memorable. Despite a few hicups with the combat and a few weird decisions is a good turned based strategy stealth game. With two campaigns that will take you time to complete its very much worth the money.

Transistor

Some will like it, not my cup of tea.

The mystery and atmosphere are spot on. With great voice acting, character design, and the always great super giants games art style. Reason I'm giving it a 3/5 is mainly the combat. I just can't get to into it. To me the super heavy reliance on the time stop mechanic kinda forces me into a specific style instead of experimenting which is something I like to do in an rpg. Now some will like it now doubt about it. Its more of a niche kind of combat that some will like and others like me won't.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom

Good experience with some flaws

I overall had a good time being someone that's played a couple of metroidvania's. Platforming and combat mostly hits that sweet spot of challenging yet not impossble. Punishing carelessness when you have to be more percise. The puzzles were satisfactory enough to change things up. They require you to think a bit more compared to other metroidvania's but not in a bad way for my tastes. There were a couple that take longer than they should due to poor communicating on what your to do, or simple trial and error where the timing has to be pixel perfect and with perfect timing. Which does lead to frustrating moments. Exploration checks off all the boxes, you search for health, magic, etc. With a nice armor upgrade system that addes just the right amount of depth for this kind of game. Best of all the backtracking is not a massive pain that plagues others in the genre. Story was nothing special, its just satisfactory enough to somewhat keep you going. It didn't really get any interesting until say a little more than half way through. But if your someone like me that's played a lot of story driven games you already know what's coming. Character's possess their usual unique quirks. Some you just want to smash, others are the standard likable "Insert character type here". With really the uncle being anything that can kind of stick to your mind. It is a decent length with nice clean graphics, mostly smooth animations, with cartoon aesthetic. The soundtrack to match. Each track doesn't get old and fits the theme of each area nicely. A overall good production quality that helps it stand out from the crowd. Also nice to not have yet another pixel platformer. Overall I'd give it a 8/10. It checks off the boxes for a good platformer in the metroidvania genre. Some hickups mostly due to design issues. It'll give your standard platformer fan some much needed quality content.

Darksiders Genesis

Fantastic game with some bugs

Story, characters, presentation, gameplay are spot of and simply fun. If you blast though the levels game can be short. But if you like to collect everything and do the side quests. Which does help in the long run. Then the length is greatly extended. There are some bugs like glitching through the floor which happneed only twice. With some of the platforming and animations glitching/bugging out a little. Though these are few and far between meaning they don't disrupt the flow. Overall great spin off that adds much to the story and lore to the darksiders universe. Hopefully they build on this vision of darksiders so we have a great darksiders 4. With all 4 hoursemen shown together instead of one or two.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

Great well thought out platformer

Miles better than the first yooka laylee. The graphics and art style are spot on, the soundtrack is nice to listen to. Levels are fun and well designed. With the controls mostly tight. Also there's actual difficulty, the legit fun kind. This game to me shows playtonic is capable of producing good games. Looking foward now to future titles.

Mages of Mystralia

Relaxing game

Its a pretty relaxing zelda like game with a satfactory magic system. Mainly for those who are familiar with zelda like games. It will not overly impress those who are not fans of the zelda like genre.

Rogue Legacy

Solid with some quirks

The procedural generation is satisfactory, combat and bosses are fun, with a nice wide variety of possible characters to chose from. Can be a bit of a slow start and there is a bit of a learning curve with the controls. Once you play a bit to get a feel for the game it becomes quite the enjoyable experience. Definitly rewards skill and commitment as the upgrads start to add up over time. Resulting in those hard areas becoming much easier. Only downside of the gold based progression is it can feel grindy at times.
