This is a great game for Star Trek fans. One of the few games that got it "right" (not counting Star Trek Armada which is from an overhead perspective). TON'S of mod's available (which Lord_HoruS already mentioned) and another slew of YouTube play through videos if you're on the fence about it. Haven't played this since my Windows 7 laptop tanked (still have my original CD-ROM and BradyGames Strategy guide). If you love Star Trek you'll love this game.
Have the CD's for this game (somewhere). Used to play this on my WIndows XP (or was it WIndows 98SE machine)? Reviewing from the original CD's as I haven't installed G.O.G.'s version on my WIn 7 laptop (yet). Playing against the computer is mind-blowingly frustrating at first (the computer runs rings around you and can decide more quickly as well). Hmmm, reminds me of "The Ultimate Computer" episode from the original series where the Enterprise is controlled by the Mark 5 computer, but I digress. As others have pointed out this is based on an old pen and paper strategy game (which was turn based). You CAN play the PC game as turn based but I like to play it as "real time". It's mostly about managing your power. Lot's of options (like maxing out the phasers to cause maximum damage to your opponent - even though it burns out your phaser and damages your ship in the process). Be advised it takes a w-h-i-l-e to figure out how to best the computer but it's worth it when you do. And if you can find someone to play two player games with it's a real blast.
