Synergia

Seems promising, but falls flat

Kicks with a strong start, we don't know much about the characters lives or the world they live in but their personalities and relationships, as well as the story's tone are very well established. Unfortunately, Synergia trends downward from there. The underwhelming middle third or so repeatedly revisits some story beats, then shuffles most of the main characters' interpersonal development into a montage, while the games endings are quite poor. The character relationship central to the game's premise is undercut with a poor twist (acknowledged in-game in a single line, then ignored), then neglected in favor of dumping setting info and reveals of events that already occurred out of sight. Cyberpunk narratives often involve convoluted conspiracy plots that aren't fully revealed until their conclusion, but in this case the story is excessively backloaded and at odds with its romance element. Graphics and music are fine; stylish, appropriate and adequate for the story being told but nothing outstanding. Choices/branches are limited, you're also presented with a few in-game computer screens to interact with for info dumps, but most options on them can't be selected. Two endings, and a curiously named 'Epilogue' unlocked after seeing both that takes place before anything else in the game.
