My wife keeps reminiscing about that time 10 years ago i crawled into our bed at 2 am and cuddled tightly with her, whimpering "theres something in the water...". She will not reminisce about anything from this game, as i was not scared after the desert fort. That desert fort from WW1 era was amazing. Very exciting to explore, and scary moments. But we soon left that sort of gameplay, and went into some LSD trippy worlds and dream sequences. The portal jumping was very disorentating, and i didnt understand much of the story at all. Still after completing it, i have little insight in what the events in Amnesia was caused by, what the blood fungus is, or well, anything. I kept playing this game with a feeling of disdain. Sort of, disengaged and unenthusiastic. Always hoping that the ugly second world would come to and end, and the game start to be engaging. It never happened. After completing it, im actually kinda pissed off. This is not an Amnesia sequel at all. Its a pregnant lady walking simulator.
The developer of the Gothic series got severely shaftet by publisher on this game, resulting in a very bad polishing budget. Most of the game content is bugged and a lot of the world feels empty due to the early publishing of the game. However, a community patch exists, and it makes many of the bugs disappear.
No, not for the characters, and not for the story. Back in the days, i did not have the computing power to run this game, so over the years it has grown on me like a temptress out of reach. Then, when i finally got around to having a good enough computer, the allure surrounding this game sucked me right in, and i was completely immersed. And i still am. This game, despite all its flaws and silly story, still captivate me with its charming graphics and soothing music. I love running around the countryside and the only games doing a similiar immersion to me is Gothic and The Witcher series. Now, i wont go into too much details, because i am downloading this and i am anxious to start playing.
For me this game is the best RPG around. You start out as a defined undefined nobody, and the game is generally very hard the first few hours of gameplay. The world is very rough, and little pink and purple fairylike can be found in this "medievel europe simulator". The gameplay and story holds up today still, even though graphics are heavily outdated. Everything in the game is handplaced and designed with passion, which results in truly beautiful and exciting environments to explore and enjoy. If you havent played this gem before, you should give it a try.
