Unlike 1942: Pacific Air War, this game is in fact playable on Windows 10 with either a joystick or gamepad. Don't bother with trying to rely on mouse or keyboard controls as they won't get you far in this game. I'm playing the Battle of Britain campaign which is great fun although very challenging. I still have so many mods for this saved from years ago I'm tempted to try adding these to the GoG version but afraid if I do I may break it :(
I kept trying to play the game but the configuration screen won't let me calibrate the joystick or gamepad. The cursor is impossible to control no matter how many times I try to drag it over the calibrate joystick option. Then I tried to just play with either mouse or keyboard control, both of which were useless so it looks like no trip down memory lane for me.
I saved up my pennies to buy this one back in 1995 and when I finally got it working on my 486DX2/66 it barely handled the performance requirements. I didn't care. 10 minutes for a mission to load... fine, it was worth it. This game was a glimpse of the future. It raised the bar for all other games to reach. Now I'm playing it again on my old busted laptop. Missions load in 2 seconds now, ha! I don't have a joystick but mouse controls work fine. The characters and dialogue are beautifully cringey and cliched but that's all part of the charm. Nostalgia only gets you so far of course and the gameplay needs to stand up still. Fortunately it plays great and the original fun of space combat is perfectly preserved in this game. PS. Why did they make the Flint character so annoying? Of course Blair would never choose her.
Loved this game as a kid. Plays perfectly on my Windows 10 laptop. This game just holds up so well. The story, the combat, even the glaring flaws in the game (like you can't complete the story if you're not flying a Centurion). This is the old Origin Studio at its best. I completed the main story and Righteous Fire. I left my guy stationed on Perry so he could run the odd anti-Kilrathi patrol to keep the credits ticking over. Also he will get to hang out with that nice Sandra Goodin. I see a future for those two together.
