The Drifter

What a gem

Ok, bought this on a whim and am so happy i did. The Drifter is an old school point and click with slick pixel graphics, a fitting soundtrack and great voice acting. Puzzles are enjoyably logical and the flow of the story is well paced. Not gonna spoil the story, I thought it was a nice spin on old ideas with quite likeable characters which are brought to life by the aforementioned great voice acting. According to my playtime it took me around 7 hours to complete. If you are a point & click fan, you really owe it to yourself to play this one. I am certainly keeping an eye out for future games from these guys.

Starcom: Nexus

A nice relaxing space adventure

This little gem which I found by accident during the winter sale really surprised me and brought me back to 30+ years ago where I love playing classics like the Starflight games, Star Control 2 and, many of you might not know this one, the Star Saga Trilogy (which sadly stopped at part 2). These games all have the same basic concept, you get dropped into a galaxy or star cluster by some reason and have to explore, mine, make contact and fight for survival. Fighting in Starcom I liked, on normal difficulty it was fun and just enough of a challenge to be nicely relaxing. It's basically a twin stick shooter, move with wasd and aim with mouse. You get a Master of Orion like research tree, not too complex but with some nice upgrades, get to customize and design your ship, again, it's just complex enough to be interesting and relaxing. Exploration you do by flying around and scanning planets, duh. Many planets have little things to find, resources and the like, some have bigger stories where you decide on how to proceed that might have larger implications. You also meet a handful different alien races in their space ships and get to talk to them for information, trade and the like. The overarching "main" story I liked, not too complex, but interesting to follow and bring to an end. Honestly, if you are a scifi fan who is willing to read a lot (no voice overs here) like in the olden days, this is really a no brainer of a recommendation. I liked this so much, I instantly bought the next game in the series which came out last year. Gonna start that one right when I get off work this coming friday and I am, even surprising to myself, really looking forward to that.

Syberia: The World Before

A true and worthy successor

I love Syberia 1 and 2 and was ok with 3 (it's not as bad as some make it out to be), but this....this was truly beautiful from start to finish. While the journey is not as long and expansive as the previous games (it mostly is contained to the city of Vaghen and surroundings) it is more personal for our favorite lawyering Adventurer Kate. I don't want to risk spoiling anything, so I am not going more into this. Suffice to say, I really liked the story and how it stayed true to the world of Syberia. The city and locations are drop dead gorgeous, some scenes I'd love to hang on my walls they are so breathtaking. And these scenes are often accompanied by a fitting Soundtrack by the great Inon Zur. Much of the game feels like a labour of love, it is truly a fitting tribute and farewell to Benoit Sokal who gave us this world. When he passed away before the release of this I was worried how they'd finish it, but clearly there was no reason to. Gameplaywise it is point and click and the puzzles are a good mix of classic and modern adventure games. Controls can be a bit finicky occasionally, most of the time it's fine though. I had no crashes or major bugs (one time the hotspots disappeared in a scene and I couldn't do anything, but just going to the main menu and back into the game fixed it), there are moments of clipping and gaps between textures, but thankfully rarely. Voice acting is great, all main characters do a perfect job, nothing broke my immersion. Gamelength for me was near 12 hours for a completionist run (though I missed 4 achievements), which is fine by me. My favorite scene probably is the first time in the refuge with Dana (you'll see when you play it), I got serious flashbacks of old 40s/50s period movies, the location, acting and story came together perfectly. Since someone is going to ask: the game is not really woke, nothing is pushed in your face or preaches an agenda outside of the game world. TLDR: if you like Syberia you can safely buy this.

Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure

A fun little trip into madness

This is a real solid old school point & click set in a lighthearted, Cthulhu themed world. Voice acting is also solid all around, graphics are nice and music is good. Really, this game is the very definition of solid. And it has a cat ....I mean, come on, a cat and cthulhu in the same game, that is pure awesome where I am standing. And did I mention it talks, because it does. Took me around 7 hours to play through with 100% achievements, so for the price that is fair, especially when on sale. If you are a point & click fan, this one shouldn't disappoint you.

GreedFall - De Vespe Conspiracy

Fair warning, this is VERY short !

took me maybe 2 hours to finish it, probably more like 1.5. So for 7 bucks, I can't recommend it. In all other regards, well, it is more Greedfall which is a good thing. the questline fits nicely into the main story. Worth it to play when you already finished the game ? Not really, at least not for the price. But if you just bought the game and play for the first time this new questline will extend your adventure nicely. Nothing more to say really, the game is the same, some new equipment, nothing too special. adds 5 achievements and that's that really. 3 Stars because I like Greedfall, though 2 stars would probably be just as fair to be honest.

The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark

A cute little point&click gem

First off, if you liked the first one you don't really need to read further, just buy it. The Darkside Detective series is a pretty traditional old school point and clicker with a paranormal setting. The main character is the Mulder type from X-files, he solves all those paranormal cases and yet nobody really believes him. And just like X-files, it is told in episodes which for me averaged out at 1 hour each for the 6 episodes (though there will be more episodes added it seems, just like with the first game...at least there is a placeholder for more episodes). 100%ing it took me 7-8 hours in total. The game is not that hard and has a kinda laid back atmosphere which makes it perfect for a short play after work (helped by the around 1 hour playtime per episode). Graphics are lovely 8bit with a fitting soundtrack and the writing and characters are great. I definitely recommend this, but if you haven't play the first game first. If you want more games like this, I recommend Inspector Waffles which gave me a very similar vibe but with a cat detective twist (which I loved).

Inspector Waffles

Very enjoyable Point&Clicker

Bought this on a whim since I like point&click adventures and cats. This is truly a very enjoyable and nice little gem, kinda reminds me a little bit of Darkside Detective in style but that is only a good thing really. The pixel art is nice, the music fits nicely into the background and the writing is great. The story is a fun take on the buddy cop movies and flows well throughout the game with likable characters. It took me about 4.5 hours to play through and about another 30 mins of replaying to get the final collectible and the hidden ending. For me that is a fair amount of entertainment for 12 bucks, though some people nowadays seem to expect 40 hours at least for that so if you are one of those, look elsewhere. If you like games like Darkside Detective it's really a nobrainer to buy this one. Definitely recommend.

Syberia: The World Before Prologue

Positively surprised

Yes, this seems to be shaping up into a nice solid point&clicker. I was a bit wary playing the prologue because of the many complains how the game went woke and SJW and whatnot and I am quite allergic to those things but I have to disagree. Kate still looks like Kate, very slim, pretty face all like before. The main complaints then are the haircut and her sexual preference (which is not even stated I would like to emphasize !!). Haircut : Why short hair ? It's a prison, they do that in more primitive ones or workcamps. Why then is the hair not shaved completely but they left hair on top ? Well friendo, how about you go up north for a winter vacation, take no hat with you and shave your hair completely off then....tell us how you like that ! The prison is clearly in a cold region (there is snow falling), so shaving heads bald is not good since you loose body heat via your head like no tomorrow. Sexual preference : It's seemingly a women's prison, it is not unusual for straight inmates to seek some solace in a same sex relationship...even in men's prisons. So frankly, I don't mind that a bit, it's not there to make a statement (at least in the prologue we see!) Now for the more important parts. Story : I am intrigued how they will weave this into a complete story. Enjoyed the characters so far. Graphics : Surprisingly nice, it feels like Sokal's Syberia and has the right atmosphere. Music : Inon Zur, nuff said Gameplay : Yeah, not really into the changes for console releases (the interactive stuff hold-mouse-button-and-move-mouse-left and stuff, could live without it, but it's not that big a deal as some make it out to be. Most modern point&clickers do stuff like that. Else it's just that, a point&clicker and I like it ! The prologue has earned it a place on my wishlist and I am looking forward to the full game.

Cyberpunk 2077

Chill on the hyperbole guys

This is coming from someone who has put around 120 hours into the game and who has 100%ed it, seen all quests, all endings, etc. Is CP2077 the worst/most disappointing/buggiest game ever ? NO!!!! Effing NO ! It's ridiculous what most people are saying. Now, the last gen console version seems to actually be borked, so that seems true and that is bad for sure, but we are talking about the PC version here ! Bugs : Yeah....you know that lil game called Skyrim ? Heard of that ? That was, for me, buggier than CP2077. And I am talking quest bugs, physics bugs, etc. not crashes or serious stuff. In 120hours I had 2 CTDs, maybe a couple occasions of FPS stutter. Now, I am playing on a 3080 in 1080p with everything max incl. RTX, so you 4/8/100K gamers, ymmv. The game ran perfectly fine for me. Story : Story is good, not spectacular. The writing itself is great, love the characters. Some great moments to be experienced in the main and specially side quests ! Endings are awesome too. Acting : Top notch and I didn't expect Keanu to be THIS involved, he is basically around the whole game and that is a good thing, at least for me. The other voice actors also great, really no complaints here. Gameplay : Guess that is where most people were disappointed. This has more in common with Ubisoft open worlds than Witcher 3 admittedly. I thought combat handled fine. I agree with the complaints about the enemy AI though, deffo needs patching. Atmosphere : Well, I am more into Blade Runner cyberpunk (dark dystopian), CP2077 is more colorful and crazy to really hit the spot for me, but it is good no question. City is great. Political Correctness : Well, you can make a pretty female character and encounter pretty female characters....So this is of course a sexist game and needs to be shunned. Can only have ugly females in game so ugly women don't get shamed into changing for the better. I like it, no need for a refund (and outside of last gen consoles here should be none imho !)

Sam & Max Save the World

Well......yeah :(

How is the game....well it's Sam & Max, it's a solid point & click and been that for many years. But since it was one of the early Telltale games it was a bit janky and the graphics nowadays are a bit dated which this remaster does fix. Now, why only 2 stars for a game I'd normally give at least 4 ? Well, as many others have written here, it IS CENSORED !! Why 2 stars instead of 1....well, it is technically fine and works, so have 2 points for that. A game that is supposed to be a bit offensive and politically incorrect is....well, not anymore. Considering how tame the original jokes were it is laughable to remove them and just shows how crazy these groups have become. I have been contemplating for a couple hours now if I'm gonna refund, I am not sure, on one hand i'd love to play through the game again (remaster came right when I actually was thinking about a replay) on the other I normally refuse to support nonsense like this. Not sure yet, might very well be my first refund on GOG. If you don't care about the real Sam & Max and just want to play a point&click and you want to support censoring of media to suit left politics, go for it. else stay away I'd say. If you want to push politics, make a new game that can then flop as all media that went this route has flopped (wonder why) and don't mutilate old classics.
