Dark Corners of the Earth is one of those titles that has built up a near mythologized reputation due to word of mouth, and the enigmatic promise that this is somehow one of the most "atmospheric" and "unique" horror games to have graced the myriad platforms of the last few generations. In all honesty, it's neither of those things, what you have here is a brilliant setup, an unsettling build up for the first hour that climaxes in a thrilling chase, a brilliantly molded sense of mystery, which all ends up being wasted on some of the most rote, simplistic, brainless stealth and FPS gameplay. Once you actually start playing the game instead of the scripted opening, you'll realize how clunky, unresponsive, ugly, and outright unfun this game is. The enemy design doesn't do Lovecraft justice (nothing here is outright horrifying or upsetting, you have art design that amounts to the most garden variety interpretations of Cthulu tentacle, slobby, cosmic monstrosities), and the story is god-awful, stunted by cliched writing that does little to impress any sort of subtly or creepy ambiance. This is an awful game that is probably worth playing for its well-regarded first hour or so, but after that, it becomes an exercise in frustrating tedium. The sanity system isn't compelling, the weapons all suck, the stealth segments are brutally boring, and the finale is beyond disappointing. Just skip this game, totally undeserved reputation.
