Is it just me or the boob size in these games gets bigger and bigger every other day? At some point, it seems like it will be "boobs with people" instead of the opposite. I wouldn't bother to write this review if the newsletter didn't shove them down my throat all the time (figuratively of course, otherwise impossible).
I got this for free on Android during a giveaway. I remember finishing it is a short time and enjoying it all the way through. I wouldn't pay this price for it but if you decide to do so, you won't be disappointed. The only disappointment may be it was kind of short.
This game has a special place at my heart. It is one of the rare games that I finished in my younger years and came back and finished again these last years. Surprisingly, the fun was the same! Normally, nostalgic playthroughs rarely give me the satisfaction they did back then. Probably due to middle age. But this one entertained me like all those years ago. I did not know there was a sequel back then, so I had only finished this one. Not long ago, I finished this again along with its sequel: Valkyrie. In the community wishlist, Valkyrie also passed 200 vote threshold like this one, so I hope it will arrive here as well. Both games had some bugs (game-breaking ones and regular ones) but both of them are completable with enough perseverance. Thank you for bringing this gem here. Hoping to see the sequel, Valkyrie, as well.
I had mixed feelings for this game. Back in my childhood, its name was "Maximus XV Abraham Strong Space Mercenary". I endured to the end, and finished it. The gameplay was fun on occasion but generally too repetitive, the ending was so unsatisfactory. Fast forward to 2019, I dug up this game and tried to play it on my modern machine just for nostalgia's sake. There was a dreadful framerate issue which I had to spend many hours to fix via a DgVoodoo workaround. Then there was the intro and outro video issues as leifina wrote in their review. I just had to watch them manually by going to \data\local\video folder. Seeing from the review, it is still not fixed. I personally have not tried the GOG version but this game is not something I'd put my money on "again". Because I remember that after fixing the framerate issue and finally being able to play the game, I just fell asleep while playing. I'm not joking! For those who wish to do a playthrough, I had played a ranged weapons build and it was not bad. Maybe you'd go for that. But iirc melee builds were more fun. Except when you meet the types of monsters that make you wish you'd gone for a ranged build :)
In my childhood, I could not go more than a few levels in this game, let alone finish it. A few months back, I fired up this game and "endured" it all the way through to the end. When you finish this game, you'll feel proud of yourself because it is so tricky to master all obstacles. Nerve wrecking, but so satisfying and addicting. After I finished them all, I watched the speedruns and comtemplated my life choices :)
I played 9th Dawn 1 and 2 on android and finished them both. Both were so simple regarding gameplay compared to this one, but I would not easily guess that simplicity would play a major role that a game would keep me entertained through to the end. I also bought this one on android, tried to play a while but the new mechanics and things to do quickly grew stale on me. Even the running animation, which most people praise in the playstore comments, made me want go back and play the two previous titles again. I did not try long, because there is a refund window on playstore, so unfortunately I refunded this one. If I played long enough, maybe this one would grow on me as well. But after finishing the first two titles - those who played them would know - I did not feel encouraged to play this through to the end. It just gets, uhm, grindy and repetitive I guess. If I had not played those two before, maybe I'd be more inclined to play this one through to the end. For those who are thinking about playing the first two titles before this one, I highly recommend against it. Just have a go at this.
I remember trying to install this game on a Win98 computer, about 20 years ago, choosing sound card details and whatnot during the installation. For a long while the game would refuse to save the progress, forcing me to start from scratch every time. I could not find a solution for it. I don't know how but eventually I found out that choosing nothing for the sound card during installation would save this issue for me and I could finally save the game progress. Not long after I finished the game, unable to listen to the outro but still, imagining what was happening in my then boundless imagination as a child. I miss those times, the imagination that I have lost and the taste of playing these games with many difficulties. Thank you GOG for bringing this game back!
More than 20 years ago, I loved playing this game on my elder brother's Amiga 500, finished it many times. I still remember the first time I finished it, it was pure joy. A few years back, I finished it again on my emulator. Not the same joy with the childhood win, that's for sure, but the game had the same charm it had back in 90s. This is one of those games that will never get old. Just be wary of potential heart attacks in the swamp region encounters. The chills... Nightmare fuel :) I never played this game with a friend, but I guess it would be really enjoyable considering the flow and mechanics of the game. The music is totally captivating, too.
