I have played the game in early 2000s, via SCUMMVM and the experience was great back then. There are some tougher puzzles. usual pixel hunting from time to time. I enjoyed it back then, and also I enjoy it today. Having said that, there is nostalgia talking, I love pixelated games, love the feel and the way the not-so-bright future picture is drawn. The review varies, if you lived through those times when the game came out or not. If you play games since mid 2000s, this might not be for you, due to the shock from graphics this game offers.
There is often mentioned, that the game is a GTA Clone. To me it is a different kind of game. GTA you are free roaming first, doing missions afterwards. Here you have missions and then you are allowed to free roam (but there is not really much to do except for a few activities). You always come back to the home base and then another mission is triggered automatically. There is not a ton of optional stuff like in GTA (Cop or Paramedic missions etc..). The game is strongly story driven and everyuthing revolves around that (and that is why you do not have those side missions like in GTA). As I read through the reviews - they are criticizing the over-realistic take compared to GTA - as I said, it is not a GTA, do not compare it so much just because you can free roam. It is a different take on a mob-kind of game - you have a member of a mob, who wants out (in GTA nobody really wanted to be out (GTA3 - it begans with a heist, GTA VC - drug trade went sideways GTA SA - JC returns for a funeral and then goes to reestablish the Grove street as a name.... etc). The difficulty is from the time it was created - there is autosaving on certain points, but you cannot go rambo style (which again, is possible in GTA) because you will die very quickly. Cars can easily go into slide in higher speeds (narrow tires). You have to actually start to think before shooting, because also the ammo is not so common. You have to watch the speed limit, traffic lights, etc. because of the cops. You have to holster the weapon, because then everybody starts to freak out (plus again police notices). If you can make it work in those borders, it is a pleasant game with great story. If you like the casual gaming, this will probably not be for you at all - the game will not give you anything for free, you have to earn the progression, by actually playing the game. Pros: -Great Story -You have to think! -the era of 30's USA Cons -for somebody the difficulty -missing soundtrack -clunkier controls
1. The game developed over time, so if you have played it several years ago, the experience is not the same now. I like the crafting part, I like to discover new loot, places, once you get to better weapons, you might try to do some bossfights (dungeon yay), and when you think it is over, hardmode comes into place, with new resources, better loot, new crafting options (you can actually build home in clouds, and also clouds contain loot). If you play alone, it is slow, but fun (if you do not know what you need and when you need, it is more difficult). With some friends you can have versus battles, or they can help you with the playthrough. And if you are tired of the world, generate a new one and bring the character to the other world (you can move things in your inventory to the new world, so no need to start from scratch, just make sure to backup the character, no cloud saving). Each new world comes with different combinations of natural resources, so it takes several worlds to get repetitive. And comparison to minecraft, I played minecraft, and it was too boring for me, I do not see the hype (maybe terraria just destroyed that for me). One last warning, I often catch myself time travelling, as I get lost in time playing Terraria, loosing 5-10 hours in 1 playing session.
SPOILERS in text. I see that recently people often tell, that the fighting is clunky and painful. Yep it is, if you have zero skill points in guns, or melee weapons. the final boss fight was easy as hell, because I had the machine gun and maxxed out skill for it. I did defeat it in less than 3mins because I did do ton of damage per bullet. Same goes for the part before that (japanese vampire clan), where if you are not sneaky, it will get significantly harder to finish. The game does not really make it easy goin in gun-ho, no skill and expecting to do everything in rambo style. But that is todays expectation, that the game gives you anything, just put something here and there. I remeber there was 1 tough fight near the beginning fighting a zombie and one near end fighting the werewolf, I did have some points in persuation and stealth, to the end I put a lot into guns. Played as Toreador clan member. took 10hrs to complete I think. The game is great, unofficial patches reveal a lot of stuff in the making, that was not in the OG game, and is a must, as it contains a lot of fixes as well. For me it was a ton of fun, hated the cemetery and the haunted house.
