(Should be 2.5 stars) Having been waiting for this for 2 years I'm more than a little bit let down. First of all, I really enjoy the shooting(at least with the shot gun), it's fast paced and very visceral and messy, which is very cathartic. I like the visuals of the game and I like the soundtrack while you're in combat. However, as much as the shotgun is good, trying to hit enemies with the other weapons is frustrating as they are really inaccurate. I hate the weapon system which requires you to upgrade you primary weapon to give it more firing modes and secondary weapons are useless once you've emptied them as you can't reload them and all the VV-1N seems to do is end them game when you fire it. Also after the first room I have to quit as the game freezes everytime I move in any direction
Having tried to play the first System Shock recently only to be frustrated by the controls which a reminiscent of the Ultima Underworld games I picked this up as soon as it was advertised. Definitely a great game now that the controls have been modernised and mouse look has been included. The game now has a sensible resolution making it much easier to play for long periods and it looks less like Minecraft. Visually the only downside is the 2.5d sprites which are still fairly pixelated and obviously look like cardboard cut outs but the overall atmosphere and improved gameplay of the Enhanced Edition more than make up for this. Stellar soundtrack, good sound design and a unique blend of adventure, fps and horror components.
