No Man's Sky

Great Tech Design, not great Game Design

NMS has impressive tech, with ridiculous scale: from allowing you to tunnel through sections of massive planets to seamlessly flying your ship from one planet's surface to another and across space. Gameplay wise, NMS requires you to constantly collect resources and refill your life support and ship systems. Beacons and leaving your ship on foot trigger save locations so there are tensions when you go explore far on foot. Each planet has points of interest, which unfortunately do not vary drastically. As the game is developed by a small team, it's quite noticeable from the limited manually created content. Since the game is lite on solid gameplay design, it relies mostly on the user to make what they will out of the game. There is a lot of diversity of planets, but some planets will just feel the same regardless. You can viably spend your whole time discovering an entire planet, as the scale is that large.. just don't expect many crazy manually designed elements. If NMS is able to be supported with free content updates similar to games like Starbound, it could develop into a much richer gameplay experience, but as it is for now, your imagination and creativity based atop a gigantic canvas will be what propels the experience. **Note: For those not sure about Min Specs: When the game launched, NMS was extremely buggy and as one of the AMD processor people, I could not even launch the game. My system is older, but still runs current things fine. Early on I submitted a ticket for a refund, but GoG support said they couldn't get my system to run reliably and would only grant a refund for GoG-credit as a special case. So just have that in mind if you're not sure you can run the game with min specs. I hate to say this, but get the game on Steam if you're unsure on whether or not you can run the game as they refund in 2 hours of max gameplay. (Btw, the game works well now for me since Hello Games patched it this past week.)
