Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard

Charming Point and Click Adventure

This was a really delightful game to play - the art design and voice acting really helped bring it to life and it was a charming reminder of classic games without resorting to "winking to camera" (okay, maybe just once, but it was fun!). The story kept me engaged and eager to interact with each new character it introduced. The retro-feel will probably appeal to fans of the genre, though I'm glad of the option of a "Modern" mode which helps hint at interactive elements rather than having to pixel-hunt too often. I may have found myself stuck a couple of times, but I wouldn't say the puzzles were too obtuse, just inevitably missing that one interactive or collectible item a screen or two ago. There are moments where Finn can be killed - but these are well signposted with a suggestion to save, and there's some humour in the contextual "you died" messages, cartoon gore and all. If you're a fan of classic LucasArts games or "Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb" you should definitely consider adding this to your collection.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest

Immersive interactive fiction with bite

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest provides a nice blend of classic Fighting Fantasy / "Choose Your Own Adventure" style storytelling on top of a popular tabletop roleplaying game setting and with an art style, sound design and general polish (no pun intended!) which makes it shine. One of the strengths to the game is the way it adapts to how you play - if you want to play the character as quick to anger and desperate to get things DONE then you can.... and then, replay and take a different tact and see how this affects the story and the options available to you at each turn. A single play-through takes about 3 hours and there are 5 endings. There's also various ways to reach them depending on your decisions which may reveal different paths through the story. I loved how atmospheric the game was - the combination of excellent writing, art direction, sound design and, of course, werewolf subject matter, which raised it above similar games in this genre.
