Divinity: Original Sin Classic

Deep, complex and immensely satisfying.

Yes, Divinity: Original Sin flew a bit under the radar in terms of publicity, but when it landed, it did it right. From a game design point of view, it is beautiful to see how the total sum of design choices add up to more than its seperate parts. The parts themselves are not revolutionary on their own: You got a story of epic proportions, party-based RPG-system at the core, turn based combat, an open world to explore and lots of dialogue choices to make. All held together by great visuals and mostly great animations and a beautiful soundtrack. These aspects could already be glimpsed at in Larian Studios's earlier games but here they have matured into full bloom. The execution of the seperate gameplay elements in Original Sin is something that easily outshines many AAA-titles, especially in the long run. Setting quality over quantity, Larian manages to deliver a product that takes the gamer serious not as a button-mashing-cog at the paying end of the industry, but as an intelligent human being. This is one of those rare games that stays surprisingly enjoyable even after hours of gameplay or on a second run. And then there's always the option to bring a friend along for a co-op experience that actually works.
