Outward Definitive Edition

Ordinary adventure, extraordinary game

This game's main mechanics are great: the combat (with buffs and debuffs), the exploring and the backpack are very well implemented. The game's premise is simple: you are not special. You are a normal person who got wrapped up in an adventure. As such, in combat you are also not special. You need to prepare for most battles, either by pre-casting buffs or eating stamina, mana and health foods or preparing the battlefield by setting up traps and sigils. You need to prepare magic combos, for magic is inefficient when used alone, but stronger when combined for better effects. You need to think whether this battle is really worth it, or should a more stealthy approach bring better results. The gameplay loop of exploring until your backpack is full can get cumbersome (pun intended), but adds a layer of immersion and decision making while you see if this armor is really worth selling or if you'd better just let it lay here because of the weight. And the exploration feels great. The music is nice, and the artstyle is pleasing, the map layout feels great too with at least a few important landmarks on view at any given time... and you'll need them, because you'll learn how to find yourself without a marker, using the landscape and a bit of triangulation work. Overall, a great experience. Not for everyone, but definitely scratches the itch for me.
