Cossacks 2, when it works, is a fine game, probably the most realized in the series regarding what it wants to be. If Cossacks 1 played like a Pike and Shot Age of empires 2, Cossacks 2 is somewhere between AOE 2.5 and a Total War game. The basebuilding aspect is streamlined (somewhat of a shame, though Cossacks 1 was rather convoluted in that regard) and resources are now independent capture points, pioneering what other games such as Company of Heroes would perfect in making area of control an important element in strategy. It's combat system is rather unique, with each ranged unit having different effective ranges each colorized to reflect the efficiency of a fusillade: green causing little causalities, to red being a point blank kill zone. Unlike many games of its time and concept, the focus is on morale; units when fatigued, under enemy attack, or having sustained too many casualties will run and break, causing a devastating rout that will eliminate gained experience as the unit needs to reform all over again. However, morale can be enhanced by additions of officers, flag/eagle bearers, and drummers, and bolstered through experience through combat (which also grants, perhaps too generously, significant bonuses to melee attack and defense). The game features an interesting balance between units of the line, mounted troops, light skirmishers and artillery. Line units are the backbone of the army, cavalry exploits gains and allow for raids, light skirmishers and artillery support elements of both. As stated prior, the combat is a bit like Empire, or Napoleon TW though with more micromanagement. Roads and bridges are very important, and the game features 3 significant formations of the time: line, column, and square. The game and exp feature several campaigns that are challenging with terrible voice acting. The game has its fair share of glitches and crashes, and in some cases might not work at all. It is a shame Cossacks 3 did not borrow more from this. .
The ownership of the Fallout IP was originally owned by Interplay but a court case had caused transfer of this title to Betheseda, which is why there's another version (Interplay practically handed the game away away before they lost it) Anyway, Fallout 2 could be the pinnacle of the series, FPS games included. Improving on the first game for a more fleshed out experience in regards to multiple playstyles and roleplaying.
