World In Conflict assaults you with its aggressive mediocrity. The combat lacks depth and the factions are almost completely symmetrical. The game does not use different statistics for different factions' units: Russian and US Tanks have the exact same stats for each class, infantry do not have unique abilities and weapons, and playing as each faction feels identical. It's a lot like playing Company of Heroes at longer ranges, but with most of the mechanics stripped out. WIC's gameplay brings nothing to the table. Stripping out base building and real resource management isn't an inherently bad decision, but when the designers do not compensate by adding depth to the combat (e.g. a cover system, unique units and abilities, etc.) the game ends up being boring to play. The singleplayer story has a pretty cool premise with above average execution (especially for a videogame), and the game's aesthetic is good, but I can just watch the cutscenes on youtube if I want to experience the story without slogging through the mind numbing gameplay. The game itself works fine so I won't return it, but I am not happy about the gameplay itself.
