The Saboteur™

Hilariously illogical but also quite fun

There is not much that makes sense in Saboteur. The plot is full of holes, the characters overly cliche, and the open world mechanics are just extremely unrealistic. Yet, playing the game is just thoroughly enjoyable. Cruising down the parisian streets, popping up evil Nazi soldiers, and even blowing up nazi scout towers feels immensively satisfying. Combat is a flow and when you get some of the more advance weapons you do feel like you are an impending killing machine ready to take down the whole nazi-regime in and outside of Paris. It does have a very macho-story with this Irishman constantly cursing, being a blunt asshole, and being surrounded by hot woman. The game even starts out with a cabaret dancing scene with naked women and the game also allows you to turn on a "nude mode" where the female dancers are totally naked. Obviously a game primarily aimed at a male audience. xD Unfortunately, the game feels incomplete in many areas. Although the city's visual are complete you can't deny the feeling that the game was planned for more side missions than was actually put in the game. There are several areas which look very interesting but are never set up by a mission, so you would only go there if you were exploring. Also, the story leaves several unsolved questions and the ending is a bit anti-climatic. It feels like the game was close to reaching its potential but didn't quite get there. But it was fun to play! And even if the nazis are pretty dumb in their pursuit of you when triggering alarms you can't help finding enjoyment in just shooting and wreacking chaos in the streets. Recommended!

Freedom Force

Awkward gameplay...but can be fun.

I probably put my expectations a little bit too high and also misplaced it a bit. I thought the game would be more in the direction of a high paced action-RPG, but it turned out to be more of a tactical-RPG. There is nothing wrong with that if the game actually went full blown efficient on it, but instead the game feels oddly incomplete in that genre. First and foremost, the AI is almost non-existent on your own team which seems quite odd as the game feels like a superhero version of games like Baldur's Gate where you also have to pause and make plans. However, in Freedom Force your team doesn't react to any attacks, tends to ignore orders, and leaves you in awkward positions if you split the team as their is no map to quickly move back and forth between heroes. Even so, the story is funny with some nice over-the-top voice acting, though the plot itself feels at times a bit inconsistent. I understand it is meant to feel like you are reading volume of superhero comic books, but I just wished the story had more coherence with an interesting climax. So a pretty average experience. :)

Outlast

A little bit overhyped

Hmm, my first real horror game and...I was not that impressed really. The scripted scare jumps did get to me at times, but the story was just confusing and thus it was difficult for me to be immersed. I suppose if you play the game a second time it will make more sense, but don't think it hides the truth that the story is a bit incoherent and mostly presented by random gibberish and weird scribbled notes. Neither was the overall scariness that high, I feel that even simple action games with horror elements gave me more goosebumps than this ever did. However, this is probably a subjective thing as I can see other reviewers think this is so different because you have to hide and can't fight, but since everything is so scripted the fear quickly dies when you know every single scare jump after being dead several times. Have to say, I played on the second highest level, so I died a lot which also made the game a bit repetitive at times. But yeah, it is an okay horror game. Just don't expect to be overwhelmed or surprised as the hype has been a bit strong.

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World

Interesting puzzle campaign

Oh my, I loved the voice acting in this one. I didn't expect excellent voice acting from a game that nobody remembers as it drowned in the neverending pool of RTS-games during the 2000's. I primarily played the campaigns as I am not a skirmish gamers, but what I saw was a pretty decent RTS. The campaigns definitely feel like puzzles as they hold back a lot of the full potential of the particular faction you play. A lot of their special powers are not even used in the campaign which is a bit disappointing. Also the cutscenes can be pretty long at times, causing the pace to slow down. It is not a big thing, but you definitely notice it. The thing that bothers me the most was probably the pathfinding issues. Several times did my units have problems with finding proper paths to their destination which is always a nuissance in RTS-games. Overall though, it is a fine old 2000's-RTS game which is worth playing for its interesting and slightly unsual campaigns. :)

Red Faction 2

Random newcomer liked it

Wow, the top reviews are brutal. Well, honestly, I went to play this game without ever playing the first game, and I thought this game was quite entertaining and a blast. I didn't understand much of the background or the universe of course, but the pace of the game was pretty cool and I wasn't bored at any point during the game. As a game on its own it is pretty fine and runs smooth, so most of the bad blood comes from people who were disappointed about it as a sequel. For me as a newcomer who randomly played it, it was pretty entertaining to play.

Sudden Strike Gold

Overrated...

Gosh! This game is just not 4.5 and definitely not worth the normal price. It is pretty outdated in gameplay, graphics, music and overall presentation. This is just a reminder to watch out for games which has a high rating but only 6-7 reviews! Don't trust it.
