Five stars for Blood? Absolutely deserved! This game wasn't just another Doom clone; it was a gleefully macabre masterpiece that injected a heavy dose of horror-movie mania into the FPS genre. What I liked: Atmosphere & Tone: Blood's dark, gothic horror setting is unparalleled. From the eerie train station to the blood-soaked carnival, every level oozes atmosphere. The over-the-top, cheesy horror dialogue from Caleb, the protagonist, is iconic and endlessly quotable. Weapons: Forget your standard shotgun and pistol. Blood offers a truly unique arsenal, including pitchforks, voodoo dolls, and the devastating napalm launcher. Each weapon feels powerful and satisfying, encouraging creative carnage. Level Design: Levels are intricate and sprawling, filled with secrets and traps. Exploration is rewarded, and the sheer variety of environments keeps the gameplay fresh. Enemy Design: The Cultists, gargoyles, and other grotesque creatures are memorable and challenging. Their AI, while dated, still provides a decent fight. Horror Element: Blood was a pioneer in blending horror with FPS gameplay. The jump scares, unsettling sound design, and overall dark aesthetic create a genuinely tense experience. Areas for Improvement (Hindsight is 20/20): While the level design is great it could have been more streamlined in certain areas. Sometimes it could be confusing where to go. The enemy AI, while decent for its time, is obviously limited compared to modern standards. Why New Gamers Should Play Blood: Even after 28 years, Blood remains a must-play for FPS fans. It's a testament to the power of atmosphere, creative weapon design, and a healthy dose of dark humor. It demonstrated how horror could be effectively integrated into the FPS genre, paving the way for titles like F.E.A.R. and Bioshock. If you're tired of generic shooters and crave a truly unique experience, dive into the bloody world of Caleb. You will not be disappointed.
This game is a masterpiece! And for all the right reasons! I've played a ton of video games.. (and have helped develop and design several too!) This is arguably one of a the best video games I've ever played in my life! The entire vibe of this video game is stunningly beautiful. The vivid scenery mixed with clever level design mixed with a compelling soundtrack make the entire experience unforgettable. The controls are very easy and very intuitive yet at some times very challenging to keep you engaged and focused. My favorite part is how an entire story can be told with out any real dialog. Five STARS! Two Thumbs up! Way up! Get this game!
Homeworld (1999) wasn't just a game; it was a revolution. This real-time strategy masterpiece redefined the genre with its groundbreaking use of a true 3D environment, allowing for unprecedented tactical depth and visual immersion. The story, a poignant space opera, follows the Kushan, exiled nomads who discover their true origins and embark on a perilous journey to reclaim their homeworld, battling the formidable Taiidan Empire. The game's strengths are numerous. Its aesthetic brilliance, with intricately designed ships and breathtaking nebulae, creates a sense of awe and wonder. The compelling narrative, masterfully told through cinematic cutscenes, fosters a deep emotional connection. The strategic depth, demanding careful planning and adaptation, provides a rich and rewarding experience. The persistent fleet, carrying over from mission to mission, adds a layer of consequence to every decision. The atmospheric sound design enhances the sense of scale and wonder. Homeworld pioneered true 3D space combat, allowing ships to move in any direction, creating complex formations and flanking maneuvers. The free-floating camera provided unparalleled tactical awareness. The ship building and enhancement system, coupled with resource management, added a simulation feel to the mission-based gameplay. Use the Tutorial: While the learning curve and occasional difficulty spikes posed challenges, the overall experience was transformative. At the time I was a level designer on Heroes of Might and Magic III. After work Homeworld was my escape. The sheer scale, freedom of movement, and emotional power captivated me. Seeing the 2015 Remastered Edition was a very welcome return. I was ecstatic! Enhancing the visuals and audio while preserving the core gameplay. It was a testament to Homeworld's enduring legacy, a timeless classic that continues to inspire. Homeworld is more than a game; it's an experience, a journey, a masterpiece that deserves to be experienced by all gamers.
That's right! This was my first game to test as a beta tester working for New World Computing/3DO. I was a freshman in the industry and was thrown in the project of HOMM2 Gold and had no regrets! Truth be told before playing this, I had never played a turn-based video game before and was not a fan of the genre. RTS was more my speed. Then I started playing. The first thing that grabbed my attention was the amazing music. One I got the feel for the game I was immediately hooked. One more turn. Now I have to do this to get that then plan to buy creatures to attach the other castle yadda yadda yadda.... I was having a great time but kept losing! No matter what I kept dying. I hated the game! One more turn. One more turn. Then it clicked. This game is one of the best ever. Look at me here. I am absolutely pissed off that this game got inside my head that badly. Ever since that moment this has been on of my all time faves! Now my kids love it too! This is truly a game for the ages. Play it. Then play HOMM3! Everything you love about 2 is 10 times better in 3!
Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete is a timeless masterpiece! The blend of strategic turn-based combat, deep resource management, and captivating fantasy lore keeps me hooked for hours. The variety of factions, each with unique units and playstyles, ensures endless replayability. The campaign stories are engaging, and the multiplayer mode is a blast with friends. The art style, though retro, has a charming nostalgic feel, and the soundtrack is epic. This game is a must-play for strategy fans—pure perfection!
No story, no character, no substance, no reason for the game to exist. A total embarrassment to all things "Might and Magic." This game was the beginning of the end of 3DO. These are the words I heard in the halls and offices when I worked as a designer at The 3DO Company. Crusaders was supposed to be an Tomb Raider like adventure game that took place in the Might and Magic Universe. Sadly, that was not at all the end result. This game saw a 6 month development cycle and was pushed out by the stock holders. We level designers referred to this game as "Level Design Masturbation." I believe more money and time went into the design and size of the box than the game itself. This is a game where you can just run from the beginning to the end and win. NPC's, cut-scenes and quests all needless. No point. I also worked on Might and Magic 7 & 8, Heroes of Might and Magic 2,3 & 4. Crusaders was the absolute worst game I've ever played and was ever a part of. Don't waste your money.
