Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

A special one

First of all, this game is not a typical one. The graphics are the best I have seen so far. The cutscenes are awesome, with great facial animations and voice acting. Thus the storytelling and the presentation is top notch. What the story exactly is, I just cannot describe. You have to play the game for yourself. It's just that unique. The combat is quite simple to understand, has a variety of moves, works fine and is a lot of fun. You can charge at enemies, dodge or block their attacks, attack with light and heavy sword attacks as well as kick in their faces. Using your mighty foot leaves those guys with a shield open for attacks. There are enough enemies to keep you entertained, so the combat never got me bored. I also highly enjoyed the boss fights. Throughout the game, you have to find runes in order to unlock the next door. A rune is a symbol you have to find in the real world, e.g. blood on the floor in the shape of the rune. This is way to overused (especially in the first half) and eats up a lot of your playtime the first time around. The game helps you out with hints on their location though, which makes it less annoying. The rune collecting gets more challenging as you progress, with different obstacles you have to overcome. So it gets more interesting later on and there are also other puzzles to solve. Overall, the game focuses less on combat and more on searching things. The performance in the second half of the game is terrible, going from 60FPS to 20FPS (AMD GPU user here). Changing around the graphics settings does nothing. The resolution cannot be changed properly either, so the settings menu seems to be completely broken. Despite the issues, I really enjoyed playing the game. It's unique, somewhat confusing, has great combat and very good cutscenes. If you don't mind long empty sections and the rune searching, you must give it a shot. Just be sure to wait until the technical issues are fixed.
