9 Years of Shadows

Gorgeous if simple Metroidvania

Disclosure: I received this game for free This game looks fantastic, with great sprites, character portraits, and pleasantly flowing animations. The music is also a step above the usual chiptune affair this genre is known for. The setting and characters are more than enough to bolster things along if you like Metroidvania games, nothing groundbreaking or in depth but that is not usually expected in this genre. One of the navigation abilities is fairly novel but the rest is standard affair – well done, so not a complaint, but nothing you haven’t seen before. The combat has a neat elemental mechanic, but aside from a few situations it is not hugely impactful. The regular enemies are serviceable but I have found myself relishing finding new ones since they are is not a great variety. The bosses, however, are pretty good and thankfully have gotten more plentiful as the game goes on. As of now I have not yet completed the game, but it has been enjoyable if you are a fan of more bite-sized Metroidvania games. It’s non-sale price shows as $20 USD currently, which is a bit steep when compared to the huge variety of smaller indie titles offering a similar experience. But if you catch it one sale and/or want something with more refined artwork, music, and smooth gameplay it is worth your time!
