Hexen: Beyond Heretic

A classic of classic

A classic of classic first-person shooters. Before I met "Doom," I played this game back in 1998. It gave me headaches the first few days because of how pixelated and labyrinthine the game was. They don't skimp on blood, guts, and violence. It's the game's most engaging feature. The levels, while not numerous, are quite long. Once you've defeated the monsters, they no longer appear. However, if you enter the hardest category for each of the three "heroes," a few monsters will occasionally respawn, disrupting the game's tranquility. In 2025, I purchased the game through GOG, and it works wonderfully, but there are some drawbacks that are quite acceptable. One, it's in English, which was to be expected since multilingual games weren't common back then. Two, the mouse has a dual function. While you can look around the entire screen, it also has the ability to move while you look, which is quite annoying. I've tried searching everywhere to disable that feature, but I can't. An alternative is to customize it to use the keyboard 100%, and you'll really get used to it. In short, a classic that deserves more recognition, and I hope they make a remaster eventually. Recommended 10/10.

Stronghold Crusader HD

Perfect game

I think it's my favorite game in the genre. It's very original in the way it takes realism to the next level, in how to create a kingdom from scratch to forming an empire. Each level takes a good couple of hours to complete, so it's perfect for entertaining yourself. You can also easily control your speed through the game, perfect for those who aren't familiar with the mechanics or are at a disadvantage compared to the enemy. Another interesting point is the levels where you make alliances and exchange goods with other empires, either with a PC ally or a real person. Yes, you can play online in the year 2025. As you complete the game, the levels obviously become so complicated that you're alone against several empires joining forces to destroy you. The idea is to "always" fortify yourself and then counterattack... If you start aggressively, consider yourself destroyed.
