The greatest turn based strategy game ever developed along with Master of Magic. If you enjoy strategy build units and structure type games I consider this to be the greatest of all time. It will also appeal to people who enjoy the wizards / dragons / elves type settings.
I've played Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession and the sequel (Stone Prophet) for hundreds and hundreds of hours and beat the first several times. The game really captures the medieval atmospheric horror adventure atmosphere of the Ravenloft setting. I enjoy "hardcore" style gaming. Game play reminds me a bit of 2e games and similar dungeon crawlers. If you enjoy games where you could die if you don't max out stats with lucky rolls, utilize equipment and spells well, etc you will enjoy this game. I have seen the dynamic I am describing in the DIablo series, DarkSun and Warhammer Quest. I personally do not get excited by a game unless there is an element of chance to be defeated. As far as enjoying the game utilize the automap and click on areas and type a few letters to represent traps, doors, where you found keys etc. This will increase your enjoyment a lot. This game does several things well but at the end of the day it is a dungeon crawler. Cutscenes and interactions tie the story together well so it doesn't feel like you are just in a hack and slash. Online resources can help with 99% of issues like figuring out light puzzles or where to go next. I have a fixation with a handful of games that I go back and beat again every 5 or so years and this is one. If you like those "4 party characters of different classes go dungeon crawling" type games you will like this one. The 90s and early 2000s were chock full of these types of games and this one would make my top 10 list in the genre . I do seem to have some bias towards dungeons and dragons 2nd edition games and vampire/zombie themed games so feel free to watch a youtube video of gameplay.
I've spent at least a couple hundred hours on this game. You must like that hardcore style game play to enjoy. Difficulty scales with level. I always have my Priest character with 4 jade rings touching all adventurer's squres. I track hp improvements and reroll low results. I enjoy this game so much. There is a learning curve to it but then you learn to stay touching the priest square, everyone having at least one healing scroll, which characters are not as powerful etc. This game would make my top 50 all time easily.
