Geneforge Saga

Two great games, three meh games

Geneforge 1 is brilliant. I loved the writing. I won't spoil any of it, just know that it's a fantasy RPG with a great twist. I didn't finish 2, 3 or 4 because they all ended up boring me in different ways. They all felt the same. Geneforge 5, though, is another 5 star game. A delightful romp, and finally the UI is starting to look modern. Well worth the purchase.

Dragon Age™: Origins - Ultimate Edition

My favorite RPG on GOG

My favorite RPG on GOG, and I've played a lot of them. Absolutely worth your time. Plot is B+, but character development is the best I've seen in a game. Emotional and immersive. Also, there are lots of mods, though many of the mods are silly.

Thea: The Awakening

Brooding strategy survival game

An unstereotyped game. Turn-based strategy roguelike, where the combat system is an original card game. Sounds weird, but I'm really glad I purchased it. Easy to play on normal difficulty, requires deep choices on harder difficulties. I look forward to what this studio produces in the future.

Pillars of Eternity: Hero Edition

One of my top 5 of all time

I bought this when it was new, and just came back to it (in 2024) since 2016. It's stood the test of time very well. The quests have depth, there's a lot of varied content, the game is as hard as you want to make it. (I've soloed on Hard. I soloed the first act of Path of the Damned and decided it required too much micromanagement to be fun. Your tastes may differ.) The climax is great, the base building is rewarding, and there are lots of different endings. It's very difficult to get the best ending for everyone. When I started to write this review, I noticed there were a lot of recent 1 and 2 star reviews from people who don't own the game. Maybe there's some Twitter drama I'm not aware of. I'm a longtime rpg'er, and I'd put this game right under Dragons Age: Origins. It's really good.
