This 2D platformer is about as generic as it gets. You are a mage gathering crystals to stop the evil Vicar. NPCs are anonymous sprites sprouting generic "go here" information and the obligatory stale memes. Exploring is split between overworld areas and dungeons. The controls are pretty good - my problem is the level design is filled with frustrating elements. Jumps are often very precise and as the game goes on the dungeons fill with instant death traps like spikes and water. Moving platforms and overhands limit how you can move in a frustrating way. It's obvious the devs took the route most indie developers take these days by making something "retro" they make it tough as nails without any meaningful payoff. I beat the game on hard and raged pretty hard near the end when they started putting instant-death traps INSIDE THE SAVE ROOMS. That's just dumb. I can't recommend this game unless you need something brainless and tough that looks pretty enough.
An amazing soundtrack reminiscent of PS1/PS2 era RPGs. Shades of Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, and even a little Metroid Prime. Certain motifs make a reoccurring appearance and the character and event tracks really match with the ambience of whatever's happening in-game. Also KILLER groovin' bass lines. Energetic, futuristic, and expansive.
